Hi, I am looking at the carburetor on my 1950 F1 V8 239. This red spring does not look right to me, and I don't see any mention of it in the repair manual. Can anyone tell me if it should be there (it is attached to a bolt at the front of the generator), and if not what might it be doing the work of. I am guessing it is pulling back the gas pedal. I've only had the car a few weeks and never saw this motor before.
The factory spring hooks into the throttle linkage arm that is attached to the firewall and connects to the bracket bolted onto the back of the carburetor. Also, your throttle cable is very wrong. The choke cable above it is correct, but the throttle cable is supposed to go to the other side of the carburetor. I would remove if from the current set up.

I agree about the throttle cable (poor man's cruise control) but the spring looks the same as the one on my late production 1950 F2 except mine is rusty. Of course one of my POs was Dr. Frank N. Stein.
