Looking to buy

Im normally a 7.3L peroson but hard to find these days. So Im looking at 6.0L. I found a few to go look at. My question is I found an 04 that has new EGR valve, gaskets(Assuming head), injectors, plugs, wires, and intake gaskets. 120K miles. Says they have all the paperwork for it.

Am I better to buy one that has had a lot of the issues fixed or buy one that no one has messed with yet?

Thanks

Kevin

just test drove the truck. Its about 48 deg here, started right up no smoke. Motor sounds and drives good. I got a copy of the dealerships service sheet. Says

Engine hydrolocked-vented fluid from cylinders-found egr cooler adn headgaskets leaking, replaced egr cooler, serviced oil cooler, replaced headgaskets, changed oil, replaced egr due to fluid contamination, replaced hot side cac boot due to split .

all in all $3325 doen to it.

Their website said new injectors too so waiting on the guy to call me back to with that information.

With all that said any thoughts???

Does it have a coolant filter?

Were head studs installed rather than TTY bolts when the head gaskets were installed?

if the truck has both of those I would feel more comfortable moving forward with the purchase if it was me.

No on both. Since it was fixed at a dealership they just put it back to factory spec.

The best prepurchase check you could do is a comparison of the engine oil temp and engine coolant temp when the truck is fully warmed up. These should be within 15 degrees of each other, if higher then the oil cooler is on the way out.

Without gauges or a tuner that reads these I dont know how you could easily determine those.

If you buy it, a coolant filter kit would be a good investment

usually the ect vs. eot spread under normal circumstances is about 6 to 7 degrees apart, though some folks have had about 9 degrees apart, but it should be no more than 15 degrees.

serviced the oil cooler??? tats a whole load of crap. if tat car had work done at a dealership, tat sounds like someone was cutting corners since ford recommends tat if egr cooler was replaced, oil cooler must be replaced as well even if no damage yet, and vice versa. tats cos both of them are linked.

btw, get the updated oil cooler screen as well.

I wouldn't be afraid of it. Tell them everybody says the 6.0's are a POS and you don't want to pay much for it because they'll be taking all of your money later for repairs and maybe they'll give you a deal. If it has the latest flash and you don't tune it, head gaskets shouldn't be a problem. Use fuel conditioner and upgrade the fuel pressure reg spring and get a guage, and those injectors should last a long time. Ford has done some mods to the injectors that are supposed to prevent stiction. I've driven a 7.3 and a 6.0, and I'll take the 6.0 every time - except for when I have to work on it. These engines can be made very reliable, the one you're looking at is well on it's way. Ask about stc fitting and stand pipes...if they haven't been changed, it's a tow truck call waiting to happen.

I figure if i buy one I may just bite the bullet and do an EGR delete so I wont have to worry about it any more or at least that part of the issue.

EGR isn't the problem... coolant flocculation is the problem. The floc plugs the oil cooler, which restricts coolant flow to the EGR cooler, which causes the EGR cooler to overheat and start leaking coolant. Keep the coolant clean (with a filtering system), and both coolers will be happy and function well.

If it has recently had a new oil cooler, EGR cooler, and 8 injectors replaced by a Ford dealership, and these are the only issues that show up on an OASIS report, I would consider that a "plus" (IMO only, of course).

Well they finally got back with me and the stuff I listed earlier is the only thing ford did. So no new injectors. But still yet I think it would be a pretty good buy. do you all agree? plus they already lowered the price $1k.

If I buy it and do the Cooler filter system, is there anything else I should do as well?
