best thing for good mpg in my personal experience is having a light foot and driving like a grandmother.. taking forever to get to speed and STAYING at one speed in one gear..
TexasGuy has it spot on. The only other thing you could do is not drive as fast. Also, the gear set in your dif determines your mileage. If you drive all city you want a shorter gear (higher numerically) and if you're on the fwy the most, you want a taller gear (smaller numerically). My '97 F-250 HD with a 351 and a 4.10 axle ratio gets 14 city and 14 hwy. I'm swapping to a 3.55 since. I see more hwy miles, and I stay right around 65 mph.
Try some Lucas fuel additive I add 3oz per tank I've kept a fuel log of every gallon ran through that truck since new and I see 2-3 mpg increase
I dont trust that lucus additive. That stuff can really mess up old engines by knocking out too much gunk and cause big problems. I know someone who used it and it started a loud knocking sound with the gas pump and also another tick in the engine.
when looking for FE gains with trucks, start with aerodynamic improvements, once you have adjusted the nut behind the wheel like mentioned.
nothing will come close to boosting your ford trucks economy, than proper aero mods.
i put 3 tornadoes and 2 airad throttle body spacers in my intake hose, and then put 4 set of magnets to align the fuel molecules in the fuel lines on my truck.
then i built a water to gas hydrogen generator, and installed a platinum converter that takes the platinum out of the catalytic converter and makes platinum gas to supplement the hydrogen the WTG makes and combines to two gases for injection directly into the combustion chamber.
my truck is so efficient now it actually fills the gas tank as i drive.
every night i have to siphon 10 gallons out of the tank and pour it into neighbors cars, otherwise the tank overfills and spills gas out onto he road as i drive.
I have played with quite a few products and here is what I found.
1. A good free flowing exhaust
2. A good free flowing intake
3. A Diablo chip purchased from FTE
4. An MSD 6 ignition system
These things all added up to better power and fuel mileage. You have to plan on owning the truck for awhile to get your money back though.
The hardest part was uninstalling the heavy throttle actuator (my right foot) after getting some increased power to play with.
Then on went the solid axles, a huge cam, 39" Bogger's, lower gears for the tires, and other such items and the gas thing doesn't really exist anymore.
PS I haven't tried the Tornado, to much of a hoax you can see right through it ( no pun intended).
TJ,
I just sprayed my display reading your post. Now I must refresh my beer, and do more research on that tornado thingy and the price on the platinum hydrogen converter for the WTG.
