I have a 79 Ford f150...with a 351M.....I recently put in a new timing chain, and rods and mains.....Truck ran great!!!!
Until........I started it up the other day, and the carb was overflowing gas all over the intake manifold. I figured dirt inside,,,so I took it apart, and put new parts in it, and it still did it.....
ok...I got aggrivated, bought a rebuilt carb, ...truck started right up!!!...
Ran great sitting still....
Went down the street to the store,,,two blocks away and got back into the truck, and it started again.....I was sputtering all the way home, and I popped the hood after I got home....and gas was pouring out of it again...... can't figure it out.??? if I even turn the motor over, and keep cranking,,,gas keeps pouring out of it.....Sometimes through the two holes on the top...in front of the butterfly....or through the front of the carb...it is overfilling very quickly.....
Anyone ever had this problem?...I know it isn't dirt....Please Help!!!....Thanks....Sincerely...Tony
It is just the stock carb......I tried to rebuild it the first time.....I thought I was just not doing right...So I bought a reman one, and still the same thing.....ugh!!!!
Funny thing is...I just went out and started the truck up, and it is running perfect now....I am sure if I take it for a ride, it will start doing it again......Does this sound like just a dirt problem?.....It seems to be doing it off and on now....
Check your carb float. Sometimes the float will develop a small hole which will allow it to fill with gas. Once the float fills, it will no longer "float", allowing the carb to overflow.
I'd have to second the overpressure statement. You may want to check or have a shop check the fuel pressure. Also, did you put in a new fuel filter on the carb? If not, that could be allowing dirt to enter.
Before you go out and spend any money (more) try removing the gas cap and driving it around with out the cap on .
I think you may have a bad gas cap.
I wouldn't rule out the fuel pump though!
Thanks guys..I appreciate the help!!!...i am gonna check out some more tomorrow..It is puzzling me....
I went back out today, and it fired up and ran perfect....I don't get it.....It is doing it, off and on....I am wondering if dirt is getting through, then clearing up...I am gonna try another filter tomorrow....Ugh!!!!
My old man's carb is doing the exact same thing. I would be interested in what you find out! He tried swapping out with a reman carb and didn't take care of the problem. Course he didn't swap out any parts like your chain. Never turned a wrench on it till this started.
It runs fine when you start it up, then you drive it for a few minutes, shut it off for a few minutes, then get back in and it starts up fine, but then starts to stall out after you drive it for 2 minutes, open the hood, and gas is just shooting out of the carb when you take the air cleaner off.
hey i just looked your problem up in my sevice manuel...it says liek the others said that it was the regulator...then it had another line sayin fuel pump if it wasnt the regulator.
Well i got the same problem on my 72 Lincoln Mark IV.
I know its not a ford truck but it does have a ford 460 in it and so far this site has the best info i can find so far.
Before it had a little leak on one of the gaskets and would seap gas around the eadges. but I tried taking it up the road and I could make it to the top of my road and and it would flood out with gas pumping out my carb. So i ordered a rebuild kit and im gonna pick it up tomarrow and try to rebuild the carb sunday.<my first time>
