My auto hubs gave out after 84K, so taking advice from here I purchased Warn manual hubs to install. I tried to do it this morning, but I'm having trouble getting the hub body assembly in far enough to install the lock ring? It says to install one washer after the wheel bearing lock nut and then the retaining ring. With these installed the hub body won't go in far enough for me to install the large lock ring to hold the hub body in place.
The instructions say "Some late model F350 vehicles (89 and newer) do not require an axle retaining ring" "if you have independent front suspension you must have the lock ring". I removed the lock ring and the washer and the hub assembly went on fine. I've only installed one, and wanted to see if anyone could shed some light on this before I installed the other one and took it for a drive.
I did buy the conversion kit because I had Warn auto hubs on the truck already. The pin on the bearing adjusting nut is aligned properly with the washer between the wheel bearing lock nut.
IIRC the setup with two nuts and the lock ring have different nuts then The single lockring. I believe the single lockring has "teeth" on the backside to grip so it doesn't loosen.
I'm thinking. The conversion kit would have the different but.
If you run with just one of he ok nuts it could back off giving you problems
I've got both nuts on there. It's the small lock ring that goes in the groove and held the thin metal washer, the rubber washer, and the grooved washer. Can't remember the name, but it goes on the smaller splined rode the hub assembly goes 'on'.
In my hubs that were formerly auto and now manual.
It goes inner lock nut with pin, washer with the holes and tab, outer nut, then the locking hub slides in and the snap run on the axle shaft and the outer wire retaining ring and the end cap.
Nothing slides on the axle shaft prior to the manual hub. The rubber and washers was for the auto hubs and not needed for the manual
I don't have a snap ring at the end of the shaft. The drawings in the instructions show a snap ring after the outer nut and after the manual hub assembly. I drove to the end of my driveway and didn't hear anything odd. I haven't put it in 4x4 yet, but I do know the hubs work when I had the front lifted and turned the tires with and without the manual hubs engaged. I'll let you know what happens. Unfortunately I have an ABS light on also and my speedometer isn't working so have the chase the wire tomorrow and hopefully find a bad connections. I already changed out the VSS with no luck. Getting code 9 (High speed sensor resistance) error on the ABS, so I'm just hoping it's a short somewhere.
Well, I got them both on with no problem. I sent a question to Warn regarding the snap rings and haven't heard back. Drove to the end of the driveway (550') and back with no problem. Haven't put them in 4x4 yet because I'm also having a problem with my ABS and speedometer. But....I fixed that problem today when I found a cut wire to my VSS. Now I'm installing my break controller (the reason I started all this in the first place) and I'll test it all out this evening hopefully!!
