Couple of questions, first of course, is your vacuum reading, there are several extra vacuum ports on a 460. Second, does it act like the exhaust is obstructed? running with bad lobes on the cam could have plugged up your catalytic converter. Third, have you pulled the plugs and checked them? I hope you didn't leave any rocker arms loose on it. It really does sound pretty rough. I went through a similar issue with my EFI conversion and most of my problems were loose connections at the ECM.
Have you checked all the valves to see if you wiped a lobe ? Just how big is this cam ? Did you check for push rod length ? How much preload is on the lifters ? Did you check retainer to guide clearance ? Did you check rocker clearance ? Coil bind ? Piston to valve clearance ? How is the timing gear set ? Was it degreed in ? First, I'd put a cylinder psi gauge on every cylinder and see what you have.
i found that the cam i put in collapsed as some of the lobes were breaking apart on the sides and one lobe was breaking loose.
My question is, the replacement cam they sent me says to use their zinc additive but it wont work with a cat. converter and oxygen sensor. Should I not use it?
I would call and ask them if they will pay to replace other components damaged by the zinc additive. I personally have never cared for comp cams as I have seen far too many scenarios like yours. I think they must have bought a load of blanks from Chevy back when their cams had super soft lobes.
today i got the motor all put back together with the timing chain on tdc with the marks(compression stroke) lined up and the distributor pointing to #1 and wont want to fire for the life of me. Any suggestions?
i checked at the cap and plug wire for spark and thats ok and the plugs are getting plenty of fuel. i do notice that while the truck is off and i turn the distributor alittle it makes a clicking sound and it sounds like it is coming from somewhere on the motor.
i finally got it to run but only if the dist. is resting against the thermostat housing. the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug on the cap while is it on tdc. if i turn it away from the theromostat any bit it starts to miss a bit.
could my pickup coil be bad and causing that? also, with the key off and i move the coil half way. it makes a clicking sound from the motor each time I move it half way around.
