Ticking noise

Hi everyone. New to this forum but glad I found it.
I have a 2003 F150 ext cab 4.6l 4x4.
For the last couple of wks I occasionally hear a ticking/clicking noise coming from the transmission area. Yesterday it was really loud so I took it to a garage. The mechanic said that he thought the bolts on the torque converter may be loose. He checked that out.... not the problem. But the sound was in that area. The fly wheel was good. nothing loose.
It sounds similiar to when I would put a card or something into the spokes of my bicycle to make that clicking sound when I was a kid. Hey, It's all I can think of to compare it to. Anybody have any suggestions?

For a few years, I think including yours, lots of complaints regarding loud ticking from the area under the drivers floor pan. Sounded like drive train, but was actually a fluke in the cat's. Not sure what it does, but there is a fix-it kit from Ford.

Thanks for the reply Dave. Just to add to what I was saying, there is no problem with the truck other than the noise. Acceleration is fine, no clanging, grinding, knocking... Doesn't slip out of gear, OD is fine. Just the ticking sound. Could it be the trans. fluid being low or dirty? I never checked and not sure if the garage did either.

It doesn't sound like a fluid problem, but you should probably check it once and a while anyway.

I think the problem is most evident when the truck is idling or at low speed (in drive)

You may want to disconnect you MAF and see if it gets louder. If it does get louder, reconnect it and count how long it takes for the ticking to return to "normal." If it is immiediate it will tell yuo if there is an issue with the cam sensor as they are normally on the same circuit. A simple multimeter can also assist in this diagnosis.

Just a update to the "clicking noise" problem. Turns out that there was an hairline crack between the bolt holes on the fly wheel. 10 hrs and $800 later(ouch), all is fine. But it could be alot worse....
