Hey guys - got the ole 64 to idle, ck & set timing - it was off . Loosened dist. hold down bolt and distributor wouldn't move. Finally tapped it with pliers and it advanced several degrees. I tapped it back to about 5,6 or 7*,,,, I hit it back, but it would not go to 4*. Hard to read marks, so I used soap stone and wiped it gently to see the timing marks. Also, it was poping bad when revved up, so I reset carb/choke settings -helped very little. I'm going to rebuild carb next.
How many oil drops & how often should I add to the distributor shaft? Will straight 30 be ok or 10w30?
What is the best way to get the distributor to free up?
Well? it sounds like your dist is almost froze up? when was the last time the engine was
cranked up? you could put a little (PB Blaster) in /on the shaft but you should not have too? I would loosen the bolt on the dist, then spray some blaster on the shaft, then mark
where it is before moveing it, then try and work it back and forth till it moves freely!
put it back where you marked it and start it up, then set the timing!..plus, remember the
dist shaft is what runs the oil pump, so you might have a prob with that?..hope this helps?
If your engine turns over the shaft isn't your problem. Its the housing thats not wanting to move. First make sure you don't have a 2 bolt hold down. My 62 has 2 hold down bolts, one on each side. Then thread loosener should do the trick. If all else fails a little heat right wear the housing goes into the block. Stay patient. As far as oil 30w or 10/30 is fine. I add a couple of drops everytime I change the oil.
