There was a discussion on this a month or two back I think, but I can't seem to find where it went to. What are you guys recommending/using as an air filter. I have a K&N, but since joining this forum I haven't gotten past the whole "K&N is the best" thing. I know that there are better filters for less money and I honestly think the K&N is one of the biggest factors in my MPG. Whenever it is really clean, my MPG is good, but when it is dirty (which happens quickly after cleaning it), the MPG takes a dive.
I have not had the same issue you have with my K&N. Whether its clean or dirty I seem to get the same MPG's. I don't think its the best but I have always been happy with it. I do use a purolator filter in the wife's Jeep and have been happy with it.

Thanks in advance guys!
you'll open a huge debate here. There are a LOT of K+N haters on here. I run one and have had no problems. I don't know if it helps anything or not, but I know I won't ever have to buy another air filter, just recharge the one I got. You will find a lot of guys on here who swear a K+N will damage your MAF, maybe it will if you over-oil it, but as long as you don't it will be fine. I have cleaned my MAF twice in the 7 years I've had my truck. My advice, run your K+N, keep it clean, don't over-oil it and you'll be fine. But........like I said, you will get a lot of different opinions here.
Odd, I swore I remember in that thread I was talking about everyone was bashing on the K&N. I don't mind my K&N, it just seems I get great MPG when it is clean, but then the MPG seems to settle down to a consistent lower number just a week or two after it was cleaned. I should probably clean my MAF since it hasn't been cleaned since I have owned the truck and I doubt the previous owner did either. It seems like I remember seeing a guide on here somewhere on how to do it.

I have to do the same thing. last weekend I changed out tranny fluid and gear oils. next weekend will be transfer case and I guess MAF sensor cleaning. I also want to flush the radiator but that might wait until March.

Lie-o-meter or calculated MPG?
I use the MC filter (FA-1883; $15 at most stores) and I get great MPG (each tank is calculated) with my 09.
I stick with the motor craft paper filter. Replace it when it looks bad and never have to worry. A filter should FILTER well. My past UOA's have shown minimal amounts of silicon meaning that the filter is doing a good job. Never over 10 ppm even when the filter was really dirty. And I don't have to worry about my MAF.

Even with using a paper filter your MAF should still be cleaned on a routine basis about every 2-3 years along with the throttle body. I would recommend doing it when you replace the fuel filter.
