Shifter removal ?

Shifter removal ?
Well i gave up using the search feature on this forum and a couple of others as they all stink. So here it is, my question. I know i can remove the torx head screws and lift the shifter up out on the 5 /speed transmission. But it's under the removable cover i wanted to leave alone. There is a large,maybe 1/2 inch bolt at the lower part of the shifter. If i remove it will the shifter come off ? All i want to do is get the shifter and boot out of the way so it will be a little easier to install some new carpet. I can see why so many things come up over and over because like i said, "search " stinks. I have tried all of the suggestions that others have told me to try,never works.
