I have a 99 Ford Ranger that was running rough when you first started it then after about a minute it would smooth out with a slite miss.It was gradualy getting worse so i took it to Autozone yesterday and got a P0301 code.Today it wont start at all.Has new plugs and wires and the fuel filter is about 3 years old. Does anybody have any ideas?
Here's a link indicating some items to check for the code. Have you tried removing the rubber air intake tube and spraying a shot of starting fluid into throttle body to see if it would start? If it started and then quit when the fluid was burned up it would indicate a fuel delivery issue instead of ignition. Did you check the fuel pump inertia switch (passenger kick panel to see if it tripped). It has a red button to reset it.
Sprayed fuel into the air intake tube and got the truck running.Checked the coolant and found out it was about 1/2 gallon low,it could have been affecting a sensor.Truck is still running rough on initial start up.

What engine do you have?
was the problem there before you put in the new wires and plugs?
add a bottle of Techron to at least a half a tank of gas.
as mentioned it could be a fuel delivery issue too........Pressure test?
You might have coolant getting into a cylinder causing rough running till it's burned up. Might want to do a compression test to see if you have possible head gasket issues.
Easy, 92rangerman, critterf1 was trying to be helpful. I realize you are new to FTE, but that kind of response isn't needed.
Your '92 4 cylinder engine is the Lima engine. It is a single overhead cam (SOHC) engine that has dual spark plugs for each cylinder. It also has two coil packs, one providing spark to the driver's side set of plugs and the other coil provides spark to the passenger side of the engine.
Is your check engine light on? If so, take the truck to an auto parts store, have the codes read and post the results here.
Muddyriversdogz, what brand of spark plugs and wires did you install? This Lima engine is partial to Motorcraft plugs and wires.
There is a fuel pressure relief valve on the fuel rail. Have you pulled the vacuum line off to see if it is wet with fuel? Fuel supply to the engine may still be an issue.
To each of you. how many miles are on your trucks?
The problem was not present after the plug wire change
Fuel filter is about 3 years old.
I did just have to replace the thermostat and it seems the problem started after that.
I never replaced a tstat on a 3.0 so I dont know what is involved......did you have to unhook the engine coolant temp sensor? any vacuum lines? I would go and make sure you hooked everything back up......any time an issue develops after some work was done it is usually related to it....keep checking and make sure the system is full.......and bled properly.....
Pulled all the plugs to do a compression check.Number 1 cylinder was discolored.Turned the truck over with plugs out and water was blowing from the 1 cylinder.HEAD GASKET!
