I know I've read about this before, where some PO uses the wheel to hoist themselves up into the truck and now the slightest pressure the wheel jumps up and down.
What are my options in the repair department? What parts do I need and are they still available?
I'm going to scout around for a good column out of the yard but failing that I'd like to know I can fix it.
Also, if I do get a column out of the yard how can I get the lock cylinder out? I only know how to do it when you still have the keys.
Your better off to get a complete good column from the yard. I am sure the pieces, if you can get them, are going to be expensive. And if you have ever worked on a steering column, you know already how much of a pain that is.
If you do not have a key for the junkyard column, take a large screwdriver or chisel and get behind the chrome piece and break if off with a hammer. Then you can reach up in beside it and push on the release pin to pull the cylinder out. All the parts stores have new cylinders with keys.
The good thing is, the mechanicals are pretty much the same untill they introduced airbags(91-92??), so that increases your parts availabilty. Just put your wheel on it and in most cases you are good to go, I dont remember when but there are sometimes differences in the turn signal as well. Cruise also makes a difference in the wiring. I have a '90 column I'm keeping as a spare for mine
My truck has cruise but in general I almost never use it. I can count on one hand how many times in the last 10 years I've used it. So I'm probably going to delete it and get a non-cruise horn button. I'm sure that opens up possibilities...
I'm glad to hear that I can use columns up to 91 or so as I'm parting out my 90 Bronco and it's got tilt, cruise AND I have the keys...
No, should go right in. Just check the positioning of the TS wiring, The color coding is the same. I cant remember there may be two pins to move. I'll try to look at the diagrams later tonight.
MY '84 SUFFERED FROM THE "GRAB HANDLE" SYNDROME WHEN I GOT IT....MOST LIKELY..THE BIG ALUMINUM RING IS CRACKED. THEY ARE STILL AVAILABLE..BUT..TAKING THE COLUMN APART CAN BE TRICKY..
What I'll probably do is swap the columns then do an autopsy on the broken one. It's already broke, so I can't break it further... Well I can but it doesn't matter. If it looks like I can repair it I might just do that so I have a spare.
