Front end clunk

I've got a pesky front end clunk on my 2001 F350 CC.

It seems to happen when breaking (fairly hard) at slow speeds. It appears to be on the driver's side of the front end.

Last year I replaced the sway bar bushings (etc) and that eliminated that noise. Last year I also replaced both wheel bearing units, lubed everything and replaced the brake pads.

Two weekends ago I took off the front wheels and inspected everything to ensure all of the bolts were tight. I found nothing loose.

I didn't remove the calipers and do a detailed inspection of the pads... maybe that should be next.

Anybody else experience this situation and have a suggestion?

Thanks,

Most of the time it will be a worn end link bushing. They bolt to the sway bar.Just as well to change both end link and sway bar bushings. Not a bad job.I suggest either Moog or Energy Suspension bushings.

Had the same thing, would go away and come back. Ended up being the ball joints.

Jack up the drivers side and get the front wheel off of the ground. slide a long pry bar under the wheel and gentle pull up and see how much play that you have in your ball joints. Might be time for some new ones.

I'll be watching this one. Having the same issue. 285k on the odo. Replaced tires, shocks, brake pads, rotors, bushings and links. Problem still there at low speeds (less than 50mph) on bumpy road. The only thing I haven't changed is the shackles & spring bushings. They ''appear'' Ok.

go to the main page on the 1999-2006 7.3 page and on the right hand side is a 'button' to type in 'Search this Forum'. type in 'Clunk in front' or 'repair ball joints', etc and you can quickly search past threads on subjects you wish to research.

I've been researching the ball joint replacement for over a year. I've got most of the necessary tools on hand to do the work myself... except for a torque wrench with a high enough setting for the job.

I'm open to other suggestions and comments but I may be looking at new Moog ball joints before summer gets here.

Great write up... several of the links I already have but it's a good source and new tips to make things a bit cleaner.

Solution?

Did you find out what was causing and resolve your front end clunk Tiny Wonder? Am now having similar clunk noise except on passenger side. Same symptoms with hard braking at lower speeds on pavement but not everytime. Seems evry second or third time so perhaps something needs to reset? No problems with steering such as pulling or vibration.

THAT 'CLUNKIN' SOUND

G'day Mate,

I had this "Clunk" sound and did all the normal things to try a solve it over a considerable period of time.

I finally found my source and have not had an issue since .

Check out my write up by putting THAT 'CLUNKIN' SOUND into the search on this 99-03 Forum.

It may be of help.

Cheers,
Reg.

Front end clunk 2001 f350 7.3L

Hey guys I've been trying to fix this issue with the front end clunk while braking at low speeds. I have read all the threads and only found a few with the fix for me. This thud sounded as if it was directly under the driver side and as if someone punched the floor boards. I replaced both front left and right brake calipers / rotors and pads, no fix. Then I replaced front axle u bolts which threads were stripped, still had the clunk. Replaced both inner and outer tie rod ends still had this issue. Finally replaced the passenger side ball joints upper and lower which were at minimum loose but not bad enough I thought would need replaced. Went ahead and replaced these and clunk is gone. So after a process of elemination on my worn out parts first the ball joints finally got rid of the clunk. I hope this will help someone out there with the well known front end clunk some of us have. Next project is the rear end hop between 40 and 30 mph braking. All new brake pads / rotors and calipers and shocks already. Still hops. I'll join another thread for that.
