I didn't get a chance to check it out last night but I did pull the truck in my garage and I did not hear it. This makes me think it really is the turbo because it only happend when the truck was warmed up and at higher rpm. I hope I can get out there tonight but being Valentines Day I need to cook dinner. And it probably would not be good if I left the dishes to her while I went and played with my toys...
I just read your signature, and you may have something else causing your problem. What about the air bag set up you have? Also, sometimes a leak in a vacuum line going to the auto hubs can give a funny sound. Just throwing out a couple other possibilities.
Just a thought, do you have boost guages? I am wondering if your whistle or squeal at high rpms is a boost leak at one of your boots... that was the first thing we checked on my truck. If your getting less boost then you used to, I would check them out.
I chased this on my truck for 8 months. Mine would come and go when driving around 2500 rpms. It would silence under 2500 and start doing it some times, not all the time when the rpms went above that. (4.88 gears+ 2600 rpms is around 65-70mph in my f450.)
My water pump started leaking and I replaced it last month. It has not made the noise since, at all.
So I finally got around to checking he turbo wheel, it took me all of 2 minutes from the time I opened my garage door.
The wheel moves a lot, I can pull it out far enough that when I spin it just touches the turbo housing. So If the wheel has touched the housing a little bit, can I still use it and just rebuild the turbo? I really don’t want to spend the additional $100 on a wheel if I don’t HAVE to.
The wheel could have an imbalance if there are pieces that were broken off from contacting the housing. If there's no visible damage to it, it's probably fine to reuse.
Is there any power advantage to the Wicked Wheel? Its an extra $77.40 if I buy the rebuild kit with the Wicked Wheel. I have read that it makes a louder whistle which I am OK with, but if there is no power and/or mpg advantage I think I will just buy the rebuild kit with out the wheel and then reuse the current wheel as long as it looks OK.
hahaha...(figure of speech). I readthe "I'm ALWAYS on ebay"..thats wht the kneeslap was for.
The w.w. for my interpretation is it somewhat loses boost, but helps in surge when towing. If you not towing heavy, then i see know reason for the upgraded wheel. $40 buks however would, for me anyways, be a peace of mind, just in case your original wheel did rub up on housing, but not really noticeable, UNTIL you remove it from housing.
I just ordered the kit without the wheel. Its $77.40 for the wheel not $40, if it was I would have done it too. I will pull the turbo apart when I get the rebuild kit in and if I need to order a wheel too, oh well, I'll have to wait for it.
Thanks for your help guys. I'll take some pics when I get it apart.
