1991 ford F150, 4x4, 5.0 5 speed.
My truck makes a quick hard teeth shattering buck when staring out in 1st (or even 2nd ) gear from a dead stop. It also makes a less hard buck when driving in any gear, at almost any speed. It is not engine related, and a loud clang comes from around the bell housing, transmission/transfer case area. Sometimes, it is hard to downshift into 1st or 2nd, with a grinding of the gears. The tranny, was rebuilt less than 3000 miles ago, and also had a new clutch, throw out bearing, pressure plate, and slave cylinder installed at the same time (professionally). There seems to be no binding in the wheels or brakes, and the u-joints all look good and have no play. The only thing I can think of is the clutch master cyclinder is going bad, does anyone have any ideas?
Yeah, take it back. Without driving it it's hard to tell. Bucking/chattering could be a bad clutch/pressure plate but you said that was replaced. Could be contaminated with oil though?
A clutch that's dragging, or not releasing properly can cause hard shifting into 1st and 2nd and can also cause hot spots that can cause chatter. Chatter usually is when starting out and you're slipping the clutch but if it's burnt enough it can slip when fully engaged (pedal released) and under a load.
Loud clangs on the other hand are generally not associated with clutch problems.
