Rear drum removal?

Do you need a puller or do I just need to whack the heck outta it?

A puller never hurts. See if the brakes are loosened up all the way (if possible) and see what happens when you whack it once or twice! If you liked it, whack it again! If that fails look for a 3 jaw puller so you don't warp the drums and get them stuck.

A puller for sure will make quick work of it. As mentioned, use a 3 jaw puller, that will pop the drum without hurting it. Also, back the shoes off, make sure they aren't frozen to the drum.

Look for some sort of locking type thing on one of the lug studs too. Sometimes they are there, sometimes not.

Smile rear drums

hi,
I have a 1940 one ton pickup, on my rear drums at the inside bottom there are two adjustment bolts, inside they have cams. also on the middle outside further up there are two more adjusting bolts which are also cammed.

i would try moving them a little too to see if you can unstick the shoes from the rotors.
rotors are hard to find for certain models, shoes are easier to replace.

i used a dead blow plastic or rubber coated mallet to loosen mine. then pried it open with a strong screwdriver. you can alwyas squirt wd40 in there too, since it is a take apart job, you can clean and dry the parts later. you can also squirt wd40 in the inside roller bearings if needed.

fyi, there is a shoe reliner company in houston called heitmans brakes, they do excellent relining on all types of drum shoes.

good luck, semper fi!

We kept giving the drum "love taps" with a hammer and two pry-bars opposite of each other. One side took a couple of minutes... The other side took probably 15 minutes.

Good Luck

Be careful about whackin the axle I broke 2 axles, they crack and may let you down when you least expect it, one broke just befind the taper and I almost lost the wheel, I now have an old school hub puller found at swap meet. I'm restoring my 46 and need two good rear fenders....any ideas

drum removal

I agree that these shouldn't be whacked, I have had 2 axles fail at poor times, never abused, these axles are becoming really scarce. I found an old puller at swap meet and keep a stash of axles in case it happens again, in a rusty climate these tapered axles become....a pain in the axle!!!

I eventually went to Harbor Freight and bought a puller. Came off in 2 minutes.

I defently need a puller you speak of. What does a puller like this look like?

You can usually get by with a plain-jane 3 jaw puller but sometimes you need the tool meant for the job. I used the one I linked and it was easy. Others have used the 3 jaw and had the same results. I guess it depends on how much you want to spend.
