I am going to do my truck some good this week and give it the full oil treatment. My question is what type/make of filter and oil is recomended by the multitudes out there? Also, does anyone subscribe to the thought of keeping their oil as cool as possible and how?
Thanks for any input
I USE VALVOLINE 10W-40 AND FRAM BUT WIX IS A GOOD FILTER.
BUT TAKE SOME ADVISE DONT USE STREIGHT 30 WEIGHT , MY 87 F-150 WOULD GET A TERRIBLE VALVE KNOCK ,
The right weight of oil is dependent on the climate you drive in and the condition of the engine. If it's brand new, you need the oil shown in the chart in the front of the Haynes manual. If it's got some miles on it, go a little heavier to fill in the worn bearings. I run 20W-50 in my 250,000mi 4.9L year round in Memphis.
I hate Fram & Deutsch filters. Motorcraft & Wix top my list.
You can buy an oil filter spacer that has fittings that will allow you to plumb in an oil cooler. Jeg's, Summit, JCWhitney, and your local speed shops have the parts.
I have to say go with Napa Gold filter or a good wix. Wix makes the napa ones. They are the best i think, the napa store owners cut open a bunch of filters and by far the wix and napa gold were the best.
I use a Motorcraft oil filter since ofcourse it's made specifically for our vehicles and I use Valvoline MaxLife 10W-30 motor oil. I also used 1 quart of lucas motor oil probably 4 months ago. Since I've been using the MaxLife in my 146,000 mile 4.9 300ci my oil pressure is consistantly on the "A" and "L" of "NORMAL" all the time, never up and down like before.
I have a friend who goes to school for mechanics and he said his teacher swears by MaxLife. If you don't use it, you should at least give the Lucas oil a shot, you can get it at Advance Auto Parts and I think NAPA, AAP is cheaper though. Just 1 quart does the job.
There's nothing about Motorcraft (or any brand or type of) oil that's specific to Ford (or any brand of) engines. Oil is pretty much oil, but different refineries use different detergents & additives. The bottom of a Quaker State bottle makes me think they're selling used oil, and I hate Exxon because of the Valdeez, but the other name-brand oils are almost the same. I like Castrol, Motorcraft, Havoline, & Valvoline, but Pennzoil seems OK, too. Wal-Mart oil seems way too thin. Some people swear by Royal Purple...
I use Mobile 1 syntetic, highmileage, and a bottle of Lucas Oil treatment every change. I have been doing this since last summer and it have been gettting great oil pressure since. It jumped considerably up the guage with the switch. I use Napa filters too. Changing to the synthetic, has made the truck run better than ever.
Lucas oil treatment is awesome stuff...alittle expensive but well worth it for the results I saw just with one quart. One of my friends has a 5.0 in a F-150 and the front and rear mail seals were leaking pretty bad before using Lucas, after he started using Lucas it has slowed the leaks down bigtime. Personal experience, that's all.
