Performance chip

hey guys. anybody have any ideas on a performance chip i can install for my truck? I have a 2008 ford f150 lariat with a 5.4L triton engine. Im just looking to increase the horsepower and anything else that is enhanced with the chip installed. any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Two options really, and they both involve custom tunes:

"Canned" tunes from SuperChips, Bullydog, etc are OK, but not worth the money when you consider that custom tunes (built for YOUR truck) are a fraction more expensive.
Get the custom tunes and don't look back.

I have three tunes from Mike Butler and they're great. I'm currently running the 93 octane performance tune and it has really woken up my 2006 5.4L. Call or email Mike with your questions. He's pretty quick (usually same day) in getting back to you.

To each his own, I've been more than just pleased with my "canned" tunes as reccomended by the folks at Troyers for my '07 FX4 via Superchips Flashpaq 1865. I was and remain .... very pleased with better shifting, better response, notable power boost, a solid 1.5 mpg boost .... all on the 87 Perf tune and .... there's no waiting or "send backs" or "tune tweaks" after long waits.

The only way a custom tune is indeed custom .... is if they run your truck on a dyno. Otherwise, they all are tuning to a set of parameters. I mean I understand you end up with a tune maybe written to work on that "hex code" only, but really .... how different is the tune for your 2008 5.4 in Fla. and my 2007 5.4 in Va. when the guy writing the tune sees neither? Ask them and pin them down, they'll tell you.

Plus, "canned" tuning devices aren't limited to that single vehicle and they do tune a '07 FX4 differently than a '09 Shelby. I can even pay a small fee and use my tuner on two different vehicles simultaneously as long as both are in the covered group.

To each his own though .........

That is what I thought until I actually got one. The difference is night and day. The canned tunes are made to work for every single different 04-08 F150 make compressed into one tune. There is no way it is going to benefit your truck to its full potential. Plus, those canned tunes aren't going to be able to compensate for the fact that I have 33x12.50 M/Ts, or the Gotts mods, or dual exhuast. Besides, a custom tune is only $30 from PHP (not sure about 5star). That is totally worth it to get a much improved feel to the truck. At least for me, but as you said, to each their own.

You say that like there's some huge difference in 5.4s as designed and factory programmed between 2004-08 F-150s? There's some difference in quality of COPs or FIs maybe, but nothing that affects a tuner. And when you email a hex code for a custom tune to a guy who never sees your truck or sees it on a Dyno .... what kind of tune do you think you get for it? If you have a 04-08 F150 with 5.4, you get the same one he sold the last guy and the guy before that except it only works on your truck.

I don't know what "canned tunes" you had, but the SC FPs do not use the same tune for all vehicles covered by the tuner and it will allow you to compensate for tire changes, gear changes, and the Gott's mod does not require any "compensating" for as there are no changes to the mounting of the MAF as stock air filter and box are all used, and the Dual Exh is also handled with no probs. There are even addons free from SC for the poplular CAIs that do move the MAF and which change the air filter location.

I have the stock tune saved,
a 87 oct Mileage XS tune,
a 87 oct Perf with towing up to 6K,
a 93 oct heavy tow tune to veh max,
and a 93 oct perf tune w/no tow.

And for a whole lot less than the price of a second tuner, you can upgrade to the ability to tune TWO covered vehicles at the same time with the one tuner and it will save both stock tunes under respective VINs.

I understand that some guys have mods that absolutely require custom tunes, but those mods aren't limited to a dual exhaust and Gott's mod or gears / tires.

And when you read posts of "tunes gone bad" and etc .... pay attention to what kind of tunes they are.

Alright, alright, you win this time . I am no expert by any means, just going by what I know from here on the forums and my personal experience. What I know is that my "custom tune" from PHP for my Edge/Gryphon made a huge improvement in my overall driving experience over the stock/canned tunes, especially in my shift points. Thus, I always recommend people to get custom tunes mainly because in my eyes they are better than canned tunes and they are only $30. If you are dropping $500 on a tuner, you might as well get it to work how you want.

Bottom line - I notice a huge difference and that is why I recommend them.

I run the Edge Evolution CS in mine on level 3 with my own personal "CUSTOM" settings. A lot of folks on here with recommend PHP Gryphon tunes, but I've personally been more than satisfied with my "canned" tunes.

Which goes to show that even the Factory Engineers who designed the trucks can find more than one way to calibrate a given powertrain.

Likewise here, just hate to see canned tunes get such a bad rap when many find them so well suited to their liking. I even read a letter once from a well known "custom tune writer" describing his tunes as he was explaining how they can't cause damage, he doesn't sit down and write a new tune for each customer .... just dust off a known good tune and out it goes. I believed him too and I doubt his tune hurt the boy's truck.

Wasn't trying to "win", sorry if it sounded so. My bad.

With regards to “Chips” and “Tuners”, years ago it was the best that most could do to enhance the ignition timing, fuel curve, transmission shift points, etc. It was (and still is) very important that a person verifies that the “Tuner” is ASE certified in both ECM and Transmission programming and IMHO be have current certification by the OEM whose vehicle you want to modify. There are plenty of persons who advertise their programs to be the best and even offer custom tunes, but in all reality, very few actually have credentials in these areas- but that’s not to say that some of these “geniuses” haven’t really caused damage to a few vehicles- just jump over to flatratetech.com and read just some of the comments from the MSE techs!. Perhaps what is equally important is the parameters that can be adjusted are set by the OEM vehicle software…so there is really no “magic” in what they are doing anyway.

IMHO, if you live near any major city there are excellent tuning specialists with dynos who for the same price (if not less) will tune your vehicle taking into consideration your specific needs including environmental conditions, for your specific vehicle. IMHO, the best bang for the buck!

It also means that the canned tuning device has to fit ALL the calibrations. A custom tune is written for that specific calibration code.

I will acknowledge that a dyno tune is the best option if 1) the dyno operator is qualified and experienced with the F150 and 2) the tuner is experienced with the 5.4L. I wouldn't expect a Mustang tuner to be an expert at F150s (he might be, but it's not guaranteed)

So for most, the custom 'e-mail' tune is by far the best choice.

Here is how I look at it. A quality canned tuner is what about $300 right and a "custom" tuner that is not dyno is about $400. OK so you can tune two vehicles at once but you can easily transfer it to another vehicle just have to order some more tunes when the time comes. Sure canned tuners work and are not a bad choice for some but for an extra $100 you get a tune that is tailored to your truck and patterns just a bit more is worth it to me. Its not like we are talking an extra $500 or something out over the top here.


To each there own everyone needs to explore the options for them and move from there to what best suites their own needs, wants, and budget.

If you can only afford the canned tuner then that is better then leaving it stock that is for sure.

Not to beat a dead horse, but to relay the canned vs. "custom"

Canned tunes are like a business suit off the rack. The size you find to fit will fit ya, probably look nice, and probably get you the job you're interviewing for.

Custom tunes are like a nicely tailored suit fit for your body. Sleaves will be the right length, the pants will fit snug in the waist and drop in the right spot at the ankle. All in all, a better suit for a little bit more $$.
