Starting Issue

Hey all,

First week with the new truck and couldn't be happier. Did all the basic maintenance I wanted to the vehicle besides the steering joint. All in all, the truck is treating me well. I have one issue and it is starting the truck. Let me explain. I can go out to the truck at anytime at home after it has been sitting for lets say a day. Take it to home depot, 2.5 miles away. Get back into the truck, it won't start/crank over (radio and electronics turn on). Keep flipping the key back and forth, then played with the automatic shifter going through the tree. After a few more tries the truck started. I was only in home depot for a few minutes. I then did something similar at the house. This time at the house I moved the shifter around and jiggled it in park and that seemed to let me start it. Will the starter not fire if the truck is not in park? Has anyone resolved this issue, is there a sensor to look at or something mechanical? Has anyone had the starter not crank because it is near the exhaust and the wire gets to hot? I have heard of that being an issue on cars. Thanks!!!!

There is a switch, either on the steering column near the brake pedal or on the transmission. It prevents the starter from engaging unless the transmission is in park or neutral. It also turns on the reverse light. It's usually called the Neutral Safety Switch or NSS.

It's adjustable but before tinkering with it, make sure that there isn't too much slop in the linkage and that the lever is fully in park.

Thanks Michael. I am definitely getting the truck into park, just whether or not it is engaging that switch is my curiosity. The truck is on a slight incline in the driveway, I make sure it is in park before I get out of it. I will monitor the situation and take a look where that switch is. Thoughts are it is somewhat like a limit switch? Just toggles to different positions?

What year is the truck? The switch was on the column through the 1977 model year.
After that it was on the transmission where the shift lever is.

The column mounted one is moved by a finger that's clipped onto the shift tube. The switch is slotted so you can adjust it.

I'm not as familiar with the transmission mounted one but assume it's also adjustable.
