Tapping 3.0

Realize this is another size engine and vehicle, but sometimes a little extra info can help.

Clicking noise when truck fires up!
My Explorer makes a clickin' noise when you first crank it up. It quiets down once its been driven for 10 minutes or so. I had this older gentleman to listen to it from Advanced Auto Parts and I can't remember what he told me. However, he did conclude that I shouldn't have to worry about it because it's nothing that will affect the engine's performance. That was 3 years ago and I'm still wondering why is my vehicle making the noise. Oh yeah, it's a 4.0 V6 SOHC.

Sounds like lifter tap from poor oiling. Try running some Marvel Mystery Oil thru it for about 1000 miles just before an oil change, then go back to normal oil.

Clicking noise when truck fires up!
Thanks for the input. Now with this Marvel Mystery Oil, do I need to blend it with the oil that's already in the engine? Or do I need to change the oil and put the Marvel M. Oil in the engine?

Also, I'm not sure if any GA local auto stores will carry this brand. Is there another brand I can try just in case I do not find the Marvel M. Oil?

Thanks for your help!

Marvel is available in just about any parts store. You can also use Automatic transmission fluid but you don't want to run it in the oil for more that about 30 minutes. It will also clean the oil pump and engine internals. Drain about a quart of oil from your motor prior to doing an oil change. Add a quart of transmission fluid. Run the motor for about 20-30 minutes. Drain all of the oil, change the filter, and refill with your favorite motor oil. This should relieve you of a sticking lifter. If the noise continues after cleaning out the motor, you might want to consider replacing the lifter. Contrary to what you were told, it isn't good for them to be rattling against your push rod, rocker arm, and valve. While yours may be mild, it still isn't right.

My explorer is making the same noise, and once it gets warm it stops, but i hate it when it does it. Atleast its not just mine having the problem.

TSB 99-26-05

FORD: 1997-2000 EXPLORER, MOUNTAINEER

ISSUE:
A "knocking" noise at start up for up to 2 minutes from the left hand front chain cassette area may occur on some vehicles. After engine shutdown, the tensioner oil supply gallery empties. The noise may be due to air entering the left hand tensioner when the engine is restarted.

ACTION:
Replace the left hand camshaft tensioner with a revised Tensioner Kit. Refer to the Instruction Sheet within the Tensioner Kit for service procedure details.

WARNING: THE XU2Z-6K254-AA TENSIONER KIT IS FOR INSTALLATION ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE ONLY. INSTALLATION OF THIS KIT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE MAY RESULT IN ENGINE FAILURE. IF A TENSIONER IS NEEDED FOR THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE, USE KIT XU3Z-6K254-BA.

ISSUE:
Some vehicles equipped with the 4.0 SOHC (Single Over-Head Cam) engine may exhibit a Primary Timing Chain rattle noise. The noise is audible during hot and cold engine operation (but predominantly found on cold engines) under acceleration, typically at 2400-2500 rpm. To confirm presence of this noise, accelerate in 2nd gear between 2000 and 3000 rpm and listen for rattle noise that sounds similar to spark knock. This may be caused by the Primary Timing Chain Tensioner system.

ACTION:
Replace the Primary Timing Chain Tensioner, Chain Guide, Jackshaft and Crankshaft Sprockets with a Primary Timing Chain Tensioner Kit. The Kit includes an improved Primary Chain Tensioner, as well as updated Primary Chain Guide, Jackshaft, and Crankshaft Sprockets. Required fasteners, primary timing chain, and front cover gaskets are also included. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

Woohoo!!
Dave, you are the man!!! That's my problem exactly, and theres the fix!!! WOOHOO My next question is, I am a decent mechanic, that can replace most things, I just have to be told what to replace. Knowing what must be replaced, is this a hard piece of equipment for the 'casual' home mechanic to repair?

Thanks in advance!!!
Ben

Its not a job for the do it your selfer, unless you are way beeter than average, with a garage and lots of tools. The Ford dealer who just did mine had to pull the motor from the tranny and at least hoist it out of the engine compartment to do it.... I wouldnt even consider trying, and why would you if its covered up to 100,000 miles?

Pull the engine???
I didn't think they would pull the engine... The TSB shown by Dave shows something about 1.6 Hrs. I was thinking that's the repair time, but maybe I'm wrong. Also, I didn't realize that it was covered for 100000 miles. I'm calling my dealer RIGHT NOW!!!

Thx!!!!

The 1.6 hour repair is if the noise just happens when you first start the engine and then it goes away right away. The bigger kit is for if the noise is there after driving a while and at mainly higher rpm.
If I didnt have a good selection of tools and knowhow I wouldn't recommend trying either of them. The small kit involves removing the intake manifold and installing a different tensioner. It's not a real hard job but's certainly more involved than some jobs.
The big kit where the timing chain guides and tensioner etc get replaced is one that I for sure wouldn't do in my driveway unless I was really desperate and had lots of time and tools.
Check with your dealer about warranty on it.
