well, if you do it with the bed and cab mounted, you will not get the top of the frame very good, but i guess anything is better than nothing.
the phosphoric acid can be bought online, or at lowes. online look for Ospho.you can get it at Amazon.com for $16 per quart. http://www.amazon.com/OSPHOQ-OSPHO-M.../dp/B000C02CDG
at lowes look for Jasco metal prep & primer. cost is around $10 per quart.
like i said in the beginning, i pressure wash off the frame, and get all the scaling and flaking rust off. i do not wire wheel or sandblast the frame clean, the acid converts the rust to iron phosphate. once converted, cleaned and dried, it is ready to prime and paint.
dude this is a outstanding thread.pretty dang cool to watch it go from yack to yumm.i live in az in the desert so we dont have the rusting probs.ide like to compleaty break mine down one day just to paint and trick it out.
i will trade you all the saltwater proximity rust and cold wet snowy weather you can handle for some of your dry humidity free weather.
just don't send any of that damn heat.
it gets hot enough here as it is.
Lol guess what, i live in alaska and we get -60f in the winter and 24 hours darkness, do u want that? Lol. Thats why im running to philly, actually im looking to buy this truck, havnt bought it but its a good deal, 2002 f150 king ranch super crew 5.4 and 4x4 with 120k miles on it. I talked him down to 7500 dollars whIch is one of a deal i guess, so how much will a body shop charge me to lift the bed and cab off and clean and coat the frame and under the cab and bed? Thanx
I dont know how to post pictures on here, i made him take picture and video of underneath and send it to me, if u wana see the pic and video i can e-mail it to u.
removing the cab is a lot of work.
remove nose.
disconnect steering.
disconnect all wires.
disconnect brake lines.
disconnect parking brake.
evacuate air conditioning, and disconnect AC hoses.
drain coolant system and disconnect heater hoses.
Yeah, pulling a cab off is a pretty big ordeal mostly because of all the fluids, linkages, shafts, wires, etc.
That is quite a bit of work into that new bed! Personally I would have just drove a little further south and got a rust free bed and then just coated it.
and the end of the story.
bed was finished last week, but they chased electrical gremlins for 4 days before calling me for help. (it was 2 bad light bulbs)
parking lights, but intermittent brake/blinkers.
they would work and then just die. then come back on, and die a few seconds, or hours later.
the ground contacts on both bulbs were worn and not making good contact. i put 2 new bulbs in and everything is good now.
color is one shade darker than the truck, but i don't care. it is good enough until i get it in the shop next year for a strip and repaint
total cost was
bed:$1500
spray on bedliner:$135
tolls to pick it up:$75
labor: free
total: $1610
would i do it again?
hopefully not for another 10-15 years !
