Does anyone happen to know the trick to removing the overhead console? I went out and pried on it a bit looking for screws or clips but had to stop because I could feel that 'WTF' thing coming on and that usually results in broken parts.
It just pulls down. I know it's scary, but it really is just clips holding it in place. Helps to wiggle side to side as you pull. Wiggle the console that is

LOL! I'll just pull on it with a little more enthusiasm and if that doesn't work, I'll get the wife to lend a hand.
My compass reads about 270degrees off so I'm trying to get into it so I can fix the compass chip and do a write-up so everybody else can see how it's fixed.

Once you have removed the upper console, can you replace the LED's that show compass, gas mileage etc?
There is another thread about this very topic that was started today (console removal).
It is a common problem for the circuts to come loose (soldered connections come loose internally over time).
The other thread had a nice write-up with links to pictures.
As well, there was a link to a company that you can send the unit to and they will repair and test it for you for around $35.00 (seems well worth it to me).
