I want to hard-wire my radar detector using the power that feeds the rear window switches in the overhead console. Can someone tell me how many clips, bolts, screws, Jezus clips, etc hold that console on? I only saw two on my first inspection in the area that becomes visible above the sunglasses holder.
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner...had a bad/busy weekend.
Let me know if you can't find the wires.
When you put it back up, kind of in the center of the console there's a cone shaped plastic doo-hickey that has to line up with a hole in the ceiling mounting bracket. Make sure you get that lined back up...
I've got the console off, but can't find any wire that carries power... the only common wire I've found that goes to everything on the console is green/orange... is that what you tapped into?
On mine, I tapped into the power wire for the rear vent window switch. It is keyed 12V on the delay relay (turns on when you turn on the key, stays on until the key is off AND a door is open). I can't recall exactly what color it was...but I remember that it came down at the middle of the console, right over the vent window switches. I tapped into it right above the switch.
Thanks - I tried every lead except the ground but couldn't seem to get power... going back out to give it another try... there are about 8 wires heading into each of the blocks above the rear vent switch.
Finally put a meter on the whole harness and it would appear that with the exception of the dome light, everything up there is low voltage. I don't know if they changed something from 2000 to 2001, but there isn't 12 volts anywhere in that console. FarmLaw, you lucked out... I'm going to have to snake down to the fuse box. Bummer.
Perhaps I didn't luck out. I was just working with a testlight, and didn't try the ol' multimeter. It is possible that I'm tied into a low voltage circuit...as I doubt that would change in one model year, although it is possible. Maybe my detector just works fine with low voltage...
That'd be something... it wasn't as bad as it could have been - snaked the wire along the headliner, down the pillar and into fuse #6 (accessories, mostly). The first part of the exercise took better than an hour. Wiring it to the fuse box - 5 minutes. Live and learn.
