On the Ford columns, there's not much adjustment possible for the switch/actuator. It shouldn't slop around, make sure you have the correct unit and it is correctly installed.

You can tweak it a little as long as all of the
positions still work.

Mark the position of the switch in relation
to the steering column. Loosen the hold down
bolts.

Pull the ignition switch a little bit up towards
the steering wheel. That should make
the Start position engage more. Tighten
the nuts.

Verify the Accessory position still works.

Also verify the push on wire at the S
terminal of the starter solenoid is making
good contact. That's the wire that gets
12 volts when you turn the key to Start
and energizes the Solenoid.

F150xlt - he mentioned that the switch is very loose on his column and it moves around.

He mentioned in post 12 that he replaced the ignition switch?
That's why I was wondering if he pulled that locking pin but
he must have because he said sometimes the engine cranks and
starts.

If you have a tilt steering column, try moving it to a different position. When
they get wear in the tilt mechanism it can cause problems with the ignition
switch.

The actuator rod is a known weak point at the hinge of Ford tilt steering columns.
PITA to replace... but it is possible.
