Where is the glow plug relay located on my 87 F-250 6.9L? It is not located behind the passenger side battery. I am experiencing some cranking issues. It will only crank easily when I plug it up and the temps have not been that cold here in AL. I have tested all of the glow plugs and they all appear fine. The wait to start light is operating fine except for the fact that it has starting blinking a few times while I am driving. My next step is to replace the relay, but I can't find it. All of the videos and photos that I see online show it behind the battery (below the starting relay), but not on my truck. Any help will be appreciated.
Its in the center of the engine, towards the rear, under the air cleaner. If you havent already, scroll down to the 6.9/7.3 IDI section here and check out the sticky thread about glow plugs.
Good description from bashby for its location.
If you look on pass side inner fender behind the battery you will see the starter relay, glowplug relay looks like it. Lift the whole air filter can off and you should see the glowplug relay on behind the engine air intake.
I was given a starter relay at the parts store instead of a glow plug relay so I wired it back up accordingly without the white wire on the relay. As of now, I have the white wire on one of the mounting bolts. What is the purpose of the white wire? Should it be carrying a ground. It is not. Also, how many volts should I be reading on the switched side of the relay when I turn my key on? I'm reading 12.6 on the hot side but only about 6 on the switched side.
