Here we go again! My 70 F100 has a 390 from a 1970 LTD and there are different fuel pumps for the car vs the truck. The main thing I am looking at is the arm that rides on the cam. I have the truck fuel pump on there now and have noticed that it kinda makes a tapping sound. How can I tell if my timing cover is from the car or truck? If I got the car timing cover, i may need the different pump. Any help would be great.
my 390 used the style shown on the left..but i bought a new one put it on and it cracked (thanks China!) so I went ahead and put an electric fuel pump on and just covered the pump hole. i tell everybody i know to get an electric pump..i just like them better for some reason. then you dont need to worry about the cams or arm lengths. just my input
Far as I ever knew, the 390 was a 390 no matter what it was in. Yes, the pump is different on the outside, but the arm inside "should" all be the same.
Most of the truck pumps had the filter built into the pump(like you show on the left), most cars had it on the carb.
Personally, I would stay away from an electric pump for a daily driver. Many more issues with an electric pump over a good, solid mechanic version. I put a Carter electric pump on my '70 years ago. Yup, left me stranded one day, so I never did that again. The new cars, the pump is in the tank, cooled by fuel and will last a long time. Just my .02.
I ended up getting the pump without the filter can, Its a real pain to get those cans off to change the filter, plus, these cheap made pumps dont outlast the filter anyway. The pump without the filter can looks much cleaner in the engine bay.
