ELC CHOICES

How many of you guys are using the newer Extended Life Coolants in your E99-2002 7.3's? I read another thread on some interesting facts about ELC's. I'm mainly interested in what brands are being used and any pros and cons. Thanks.

I'm running it for a couple years now. I beleive that the e99 has some o-ring issues with the elc. I would check on this if yours is an early bird -Oh I got the elc concentrate from Cat dealer

I'm running DELO in my 2002. Let it be noted that you cant run ELC in an e99 with out modifications.

I've had it in my e99 (Delo ELC) for over three years with no modifications (you are referring Trey to resealing the injector cups I assume).

Neal,

Just out of curiosity what is your engine build date?

Thanks.

Mar 3, 98 here. I was just wondering if there might be a time that they started using a different injector cup retaining compound on the E99s, but now I doubt it.

I use CAT pre-mixed ELC. Available at any CAT dealer (in every major city in the country) and runs about $10/gal.

Rotella ELC is what I usually see at truck stops. AFAIK, there is no reason these cannot be used together if ya need to top off on the road.

FWIW, we've done cups on a few e99 and OBS trucks - and that sealant sure LOOKS the same as late '99... I also have never seen pics of 'failed sealant' on e99 from ELC.

Thanks for the input. It looks like I should steer away from the newer cooalnts and go with the original spec. from Ford with FW-15 additive.

Clay posted a pic sometime back. I'll see if I can find it.

Found it.

As Gooch say's, "To be certain, the problems found with the older type of sealant used during injector cup installation, which doesn't mix well with an OAT ELC, is enough to stop someone in their tracks."

Changing over to Cat ELC Cooling System,

Today I got the 5 Gallons of Cat ELC Concentrate 119-5150
Strawberry-Red Coolant. The cost was $ 25.00 each,
I bought 5 gallons of the concentrate, 4 to use and one extra for stock.

The Cat ELC is rated at 6 Years or 6000 Hours or 600,000 miles.

http://www.altorfer.com/images/winterspecials09_web.pdf

http://www.petersonpower.com/industr...entrebates.pdf

I bought a gallon of each Restore & Restore plus 25.00 + 30.00 a gal.

I bought 42 gallons seven cases of (6) bottles/gallons each Distilled water.

I have a new Bosch water-pump, hoses, 203 stat, housing, coolant-filter,
I will take the pics and make the pdf as we do the job, and write down
how many minutes the engine cools before we drain and re-fill with water
for the next flush.
I will back-flush using the Hose-"T" with pressure and pull the engine block plugs.

A Cat Mechanic told me to use a Hose w/tap water to back-flush using the "T", it will get so much more junk out the system vs. using only the distilled dropped into a funnel/feed.

I have read where many people say the back-flush is well worth the time to do it right,
I am shooting it with the HD i-Flip Video Recorder and will UL to YouTube.

This is copied from another Forum Site:

( Mixing coolant types... - Escapees Discussion Forum )

There is a lot more than just grabbing a jug of stuff and dumping it in the engine.

2 years ago, I had to resleeve a JD diesel backhoe that used "normal" (non-diesel) green antifreeze that the SCA additives had not been added or tested (it was bought used so history is a murky thing - testing showed that the coolant was generic automotive ethylene glycol). The problem with "automotive" antifreeze is that the diesel detenations will cause cavatation and "eat" holes through the cylinder walls. Anti freeze is formulated for the use intended.

Also watch your coolant filter. Many come with SCA additives that are NOT good to mix with the Organic Acid Coolants (ELC's)

With a $15,000 ~ engine I am going to take a chance on bad coolant?

Let me pose another question. Why do you use diesel oil (Rotella, Delvac) with a API (American Petroleum Institue) oil rated for C* (G thru J+) instead of S* (F thru I+)? C rating is for Compression ignition engines, S is for Spark ignition engines

Orange Might be Dexcool - Article on some Dexcool stuff (gist of the article is correct but he is off on some points) - http://flashoffroad.com/Maintenance/...antifreeze.htm

Ford does mention it in the diesel supplement book (does not highlight it though). It will eat a GM block. Most take the attitude that if you buy a diesel - know what you are buying.
