One of the issues I had with my EGR is that there would be no power on acceleration, then after about 2200 rpm it would kick in. Lot of black smoke too until the power kicked back on. So what I did was clean the EGR valve. I bought a gasket kit, under $20 and put it back together. Everything worked fine after the clean up. The valve was so caked with deposits that it would not open with finger pressure. Once I cleaned the EGR the valve would open freely with finger pressure. If you suspect the EGR I would clean it anyways because it is not a difficult nor expensive job. Lots of info on this site on how to clean the EGR.
I also bought bought an AutoEnginuity scan tool. There is a learning curve to this tool but you get a lot of information from it. I am now showing a turbo underboost code: P0299 Turbo / Super Charger Underboost. So when the weather gets warmer the turbo is coming out for a cleaning. Probably do the oil cooler and EGR cooler while the turbo is out too because the oil and water temps are not that close together.
If you go for the AutoEnginuity scan tool buy from:
