It is wise to disconnect the batteries any time you do electrical work on any vehicle. however, I have heard that if you connect a 9volt battery and a blocking diode to the cigarette lighter socket before you disconnect them, you might not lose your presets on the radio. haven't tried that trick yet. but next time i need to disconnect the batteries...
the memory and clock in most radios only needs 3.3 or 5 volts to function. theres a nice regulator circuit that takes 12v from the constant power and regulates it down to the needed voltage. so 9volts would also work.
