Just thought I would introduce myself. I've loved Ford trucks ever since my Dad bought a 1966 short bed when I was 11 years old. He told me it would be mine when I turned 16 however, as soon as it died and he couldn't afford to fix it he sold it for next to nothing. When I turned 18 and scraped up some money I bought a pretty nice 1972 2WD long bed and loved it. I had to sell it two years later when I moved to a different state. I'm 40 now and I'm looking to find a 2WD short bed between the years of 1969 and 1972. I have around $5,000 to 6,000 to spend on something that I can use and drive occasionally. Any help I can get on what to look for on my journey would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.
Welcome to FTE! Since I live in the rust belt, I can tell you some of what to look out for as far as rust issues. The front cab mounts, floor pans, supporting ribs under the floor, roof area above the windshield and the lower back of the cab. Also, the lower area of the front fenders and the doors. Beware of owners claiming the engine is a 390 when it may be a 360. Only way to tell is by measuring the stroke. Do you prefer a v-8 or 6? Auto or manual? Any options? Let us know and we can be more specific to help you. When you find one you like, post some pics and we can tell if it is worth the asking price. Good luck in your search and you should find a very nice truck in your price range.
Ben Welcome to FTE. There is a grill change in 71, my favorite is the 69 Ranger grill, but that's me.
If you spend $5000.00 on a truck make sure it is in great shape. Big thing is take your time, don't buy the first truck that you see unless you can't walk away from it.
I looked at your profile and you are from Wa. there are rusted out truck there and trucks that are pristine. Fine a pristine one, take it home with you & be forever happy.
Yeah John is right, and I'm also in WA and was just on Seattle-Tacoma Craigslist and there were many 67-72 trucks listed. Some great some not so great, but most were well under your budget. The short bed one might be a tuff one to find though. If you haven't checked it out take a look. Good luck
I am also in WA and have been watchin the area craigslists for parts for my truck and haven't seen any 2wd short box's that I can think of. If I find one I'll pass it on! I picked mine up on the east side of the state for $1000 about 10 months ago with very little rust, but its a 4wd shortbox and in need of some fixin.
I think you should be able to find something that isn't rusty for much less than 5k as long as you are willing to be patient and not afraid to get your hands dirty. Good luck with your search!
Wow, this forum is great. Yeah rust is my main concern. I would prefer an eight cylinder AT, but I'm not opposed to a six. It must be a short bed and I'm willing to play the waiting game to find a solid body with no to minimal rust. I'm looking to find something as stock as possible with the exception o maybe wheels. I see there are two on craigslist in my area right now within my price range and I'm hoping to look at them both this weekend. I'm still about a month and a half away from the 5,000 in savings, but I'm going to start looking now to learn as much as possible so when I pull the trigger I will know it's right. Thanks for the help and your time. This has been a long time coming and I'm excited.
Ben, On the right coast car shows & swap meets are starting up soon, spend your sat. at those if you can, there are usually folks with vehicles for sale in the parking lots.
Take photos post them here with questions & we will try to advise.
