I just had a pressure test on my coolant to ensure I have no leaks anywhere. Now I want to do a complete change on the coolant. I plan on getting a new stock T-stat from ford as well. So after i drain the radiator do I really need to remove the plugs in the block. Cant I just refill witht he hose and then redrain until it is clear and then drain. Then if I dont pull the plugs Approx how much is water is in the system? I want to get the Extended Life Red Antifreeze Concentrate gallons from Fleet Pride to do this job. If I have a idea of how much is left in the system I can adjust the mix for the first batch. Also I know that you are supposed to use distilled water, but where do you get that much distilled? I do Have a big water purification system which removes bacteria and metals from my water and a softener, it is basically blank out of my tap. And how much does the entire system hold to refill. I think the red ELC concentrate would work the best for me. I think this would be ok for my truck from what i have red. I have a 2002 7.3. thanks Jeff
I didn't take the plugs out when I changed to the ELC, I ran a bunch of hose water thru it with the thermo-stat out. Then I did the distilled water deal one time put the thermo-stat in dumped 4 gal of the concentrate in then topped of with distilled water. I intended on pulling the plugs out but when I went to get the one on the driver side it didn't want to budge so I thought it would turn into a helluva mess so I just left them alone.
yep That is my situation with the plugs, so i dont even want to go there. How much distilled water did you get to do the final flush out? and then used 4 gallons of concentrate elc? topped off with distilled? I'm just not sure the correct amounts thanks jeff
I sprayed my plugs with PB for a couple of days. The drivers side plug I used a 3/8" socket wrench with a 1/4" reducer and 3 inch extension. Came right out. The passengers side just a 1/4" socket wrench with no socket, it was the easiest. I just want to make sure I get all the chunks out of the motor, and do this thing right. I think the PB Blaster was the secret.
I bought 20 gallons of distilled water, and 4 gallons of CAT ELC concentrate (red). Total cost with NAPA flush kit, extra 5/8 hose, thermostat gasket, distilled water and ELC was $114.72.
I was able to removethe plugs, the p/s is a PITA, but onced removed, them plugs dump atleast 3-gals total. If you can remove them, i'd recommend doing it, if not, then i'd flush with atleast 20-25 gals distilled, then fill with 4-gals of ELC, then top off with distilled.
You may want to consider changing the name of your thread to Coolant Flush by Gooch, so it comes up first on the FTE site search, when a search of Coolant Flush is entered. Most "family members" don't know who Gooch is until after they read the thread. They are searching Coolant Flushing and your above titled page, Gooch's Coolant Flush Procedure and In-Depth Coolant Information , doesn't come up until after a few pages of the FTE search results. With that said, a title of Coolant Flush by Gooch may also help when people do a Yahoo or Google search placing FTE at the top of the search results list over those "other" diesel forums. Wording is the key to a successful search, and a way to direct potential members to FTE. Check it out!

I know where you're coming from Stewart, but the owner of the Superdutypsd.com site is an FTE member. Just sayin'.
I understand, and that's cool!
The reason I created that post was because every time these threads came up, peeps were posting links to other forums for Gooch's procedure. I figured FTE should have it's own thread so we wouldn't have to send people off-site for help. So I contacted Gooch before creating that thread to make sure there were no updates and he said there weren't, and then gave me the links to his photo's so I could include them in the thread.
It just seemed like EVERY forum out there had Gooch's procedure except ours.
Plus, I added a lil sumthin-sumthin to the thread too.
I also could not budge the block plugs. I used total 20 gallons distilled water and G-05 in 2009 as I could not find concentrate. Now it's available in my area and thinking of doing this again.
I will never hit mileage, always time frame. Still good idea with fleet rite or other I can find?
Also curious about coolant filtration with ELC? Neccessary?
CAT told me they don't use filters with ELC, but CAT uses ELC from the beginning. They did stress however, if you filter your coolant to use "blank filters" when using ELC, and not filters laced with SCA's.
Try to spray the plugs for a couple of days with PB Blaster. The plug above the starter is alittle hard to spray but I put my finger on the plug with one hand so I could feel I was spraying it good with the other. Of course I was using gloves, safety glasses and a protective suit. I would have never believed they would come out that easy.
I am using Cat ELC concentrate because of availability. It costs $19.50 a gallon. Decided to change out the coolant reservoir also. Found a DORMAN 603-213 for $64.99 locally, with lifetime warranty. Figured that I might as well go all the way with this ELC change-out. The original coolant reservoir plastic was getting brittle, and probably didn't have much life left. Plastic technology has improved since 2002, I was told.
