I have an ongoing issue with my '99 F-350. The headlights will only work on low beam. When i turn on the high beams the lights just go off. The parking lights and the tail lights all stay on just the headlights themselves go out. I have checked every single fuse i can find on the truck and I even changed the multifunction switch that the local shop told me was the issue but the problem is still there. I do not have access to any device to check for any codes but there has been no check enging light or anything else lit up. Any idea on where to go next before i just go to a mechanic and drop a bunch of money on this small problem.
There was a post just the other day where they had no high beams, was suggested that they change there bulbs, very rare that both bulbs go out at the same time but I guess it happens.
Could be the high beam switch also - I would think it was the switch if they stopped working at the same time but could be the bulbs
The multi function switch would be my next guess as well.
Sometimes the contacts just get dirty and can be cleaned. If you want to give it a try, just remove the switch and spray some electrical parts cleaner on the contacts and move the controls back and forth a little bit. Then put it back together and see if that makes any difference.
bulbs changed out for silver stars. Still no brights but at least the dims are a lot brighter. I have a sneaky suspicion my problem is in the fuse block. The 15 amp fuse for the hi beams is so loose in there that the PO had to put a little metal "jumper" to hold it in. He also had multiple electronic in that he took out before selling. There are cut wires and "blade" plugs hanging all over the place. I guess tomorrow or the weekend I am going to finally teach myself how to use a multi tester and try to unravel this puzzle. Any other ideas from the Brotherhood?
There is a possibility that there was a headlight harness installed at some point. If the PO went smack happy cutting wires and there was one installed he may have cut out the high bean relay.
Jumper across the fuse sockets with wire that fits tight. Flick the high beams to see if they work. Don't leave them on. If they work then everything is good up to the fuse socket.
You can also just make up a test jumper with an inline fuse holder and a 15A fuse.
