My 1995 PSD F350 died momentarilly on my way home today. It came right back, but the check engine light was on and the transmission overdrive off light was flashing. The lights then go out and everything seems normal except the shifting patterns are all messed up. It shifts hard, almost like the torque converter isn't working anymore. This is actually the second time it has happened, and it goes back to normal the next time I drive it. It's just wierd that the engine cuts out like that. Both times it has been wet weather, and at a speed of around 55mph. Any ideas or suggestions for what to look for or maybe replace would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tim.
The engine cutting out sounds like a cps problem but I don't know why that would cause the transmission to go to safe mode. I would have it scanned for codes and hope it is not 1728 TC going south.
Just got my 97 F-350 back from the shop. Was about 40 miles from home on the interstate, and power just died- had to really work the throttle to get up hills to limp home.
With the sick engine, upshifts became something to fear. Unless I got fully off the throttle at just the right time, 1st to 2nd was like "POW! Did I just get rear-ended?" I was afraid something was going to break from the violence. 2nd to 3rd was better, but still very harsh.
Very limited driving on now-healthy engine, but transmission seems fine. I inquired in the transmission forum, and was told that the heavy throttle with poor engine performance fools the shift control program, my transmission problems were typical with a sick engine, and the problems would disappear with a healthy engine. So far, that seems about right.
Shop diagnosed my problem as CPS & transducer, and injector driver control module (a $950 part!).
