Towing problem with 6.0L

I own a 2006 Ford F250 6.0L with the Torq-shift transmission that has 25,000 miles driven. I am having an unknown issue while towing. Please excuse my lack of technical knowledge, but I will try to explain this issue as best as I can.

When towing my trailer (10,000 pounds or so 5th wheel) I have what can best be explained as a cutting in/out symptom. This occurs generally around 55-65mph or so while in 4th gear. I have to either decelerate or accelerate to resolve the issue. Often times I will add enough acceleration to force the transmission into shifting down until my speed picks up just over 65mph. If the transmission shifts into another gear the problem goes away.

The problem sounds like a tire rubbing a wheel well and seems to be coming from the exhaust pipe area. The truck feels like it is lurching forward and then retarding back. This happens both in and out of tow/haul mode. I don't know if this is transmission, exhaust, or engine related. It is

This has happened since I bought the truck new from the dealership.

Does anyone have any similar experiences with this or have an idea of what may be happening?

Thanks, Tim.

Hi Tim.

Does your truck do this when you're not towing, or only when you're towing?

Since you're under warranty, I would try another service department.

It only does this while towing. I have not had any issues while not towing. It did this with my 5th wheel and old travel trailer. Both weighing about 10,000 pounds.

I'm not a diesel guy, but my first thought would be you are having a problem with the variable turbo vanes. I could be way off base.

You should drop down to the 6.0L Power Stroke Forum and discuss your problem down there. If it is engine related those guys should be able to point you in the right direction.

Have you been watching your boost gauge when you get the noise and the cutting in and out? You could unplug the egr and run it to see if the problem goes away or it is possible like redford said that the vains are sticking in the turbo.

Sounds like turbo fart (do a search) that could be from sticking turbo. Have you noticed a drop in boost or black smoke when you hear the noise? If you're getting this noise under steady throttle (not when you let off after a heavy pull) then you need to get it into the dealer. There are other possible reasons for this such as EGR.

Had the same problem with my 05 KR, took it to the dealer with trailer in tow ( 36ft 15K fiver ) and took the service tech for a ride. It's a problem with the trans. program that messes up in tow haul mode, installed a new flash and reprogramed something with the tranny and all is well. Point is, take the trailer with you and take them for a ride. good luck and keep us posted and visit us more often.

This occurs when throttle is being applied, not when I let off. It happens when in tow haul/mode and when not in tow/haul mode. We just drove 600 miles home from Utah and it has been consistently occuring all day long, usually between 50-60 mph and especially while driving up inclines. I cannot recall if this happens when going up inclines while not towing my trailor.

It sounds just like the Youtube video linked by another member under "Turbo Fart".

are ya seeing black smoke when it dose this? how often do you drive your truck and how do ya drive it when you do? These trucks don't like to sit much, if you use it as a weekend warrior, you need to go out and beat on it a couple times a week. Same if your a grampa driver (excuse me, no offense intended) These trucks need to be beat on once in a while to clear them out.. Im betting a couple guys have this covered with the vanes, but the variety of things that really could be wrong could make a list. For instance I had the same issues as you and it ended up being the vanes in my turbo were tore up. Others still had the same issues and it turned out to be the egr or a simple sensor like the map. your under warrenty, your best bet is to let ford take care of it, it can be an expensive bill if you try to take care of it yourself.

This is a daily commuter (50 miles one way) in which it is driven in excess of 80mph. I've set an appointment with my local Ford service department for Wednesday morning. I'm interested to see how they treat my problem.

Thanks, Tim.

I had a very similar problem with my 03. It was a sticky turbo. The post above that stated that they reprogrammed the tranny may also have the same problem. The reprogram of the tranny will make it shift differently and this problem may not be noticed again. I had the tranny reprogrammed also but I still notice the issue in certain instances. I did not have any issues after the turbo replacement.

Good luck...
