Transmission questions

I have a 1966 F250 Camper Special which i have been driving a bit lately. The truck actually belongs to a friend who inherited it from her father and i've been doing some work on it for her.

It's always leaked some ATF, but this last weekend it started almost pouring it out. Crawled underneath it today to see what's up. ATF is somehow pooling up inside the bell housing, and then leaking out the bottom.

I think it's a C4. Given the location of the leak, it looks like the trans is going to have to come out to fix it. I guess the question is do i look for a local (Bay Area) shop to rebuild it, or try and source a complete replacement from somewhere, either online or off.

Any tips or suggestions?

It's more than likely that the front pump seal is leaking, not unusual on a 46 year old vehicle. The seal should be less than $20.00, and as long as it's shifting OK, I wouldn't overhaul it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. What size is the engine? If it's a V8, it's not a C4.

It's the FE 352

I should add, that when it would hold enough ATF, it shifted a bit rough, but nothing crazy. Now, it won't hold enough ATF to make a 15 minute drive, and it'll struggle to even engage. We do need to do this as cheaply as possible, so if i can get away with just replacing a seal or two i'll do that. Any preffered source for said seal? Macs? Dennis Carpenter?

This seal should be available from most autoparts stores. Do you live in the LA area? If so...

The best dang autoparts store for older vehicles: Engler Brother Auto Parts on Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica.

Does the truck have to be lifted to drop the transmission or is there enough room already?

The transmission can be removed from under the truck if the truck was originally delivered with the COM. Check the Door Tag and the trans should be a code G.

Look under the truck and check the tie member that goes from the radius arms across and under the trans If it has bolts it is removable. If not you will need to remove the rivets pull it out and replace the rivets with bolts. 65 is rivets for manual or auto and 66 should have bolts on a factory automatic frame.

If you dont want to do this the Engine and transmission will need to be removed from the truck as one piece. The trans will not remove from under the truck as the bellhousing is larger than the opening.

I **** you not, this was as it was removed from the truck...

A bit loose - YouTube

Turns out that the brackets attached to the frame, that the crossmember bolts to, was riveted on one side and bolted on the other. Go figure. I un bolted what i could and just slid the cross members back far enough to drop the trans out in front of them.

Now i have an issue with the replacement seal. The one i have is clearly too big to go in...

If the replacement front pump seal is clearly too big, it isn't the following, which is correct for 1965/67 F100/350 352 with MX C-O-M = See post 7 for additional applications.

I wish you had listed the specs for the wrong replacement seal. It might be the following, if the specs match:

C2AZ-7A248-A .. Front Pump Seal / 2 3/4" O.D. / 2" I.D. / 3/8" thick.

Applications: 1964/83 C4 / 1966/96 C6 and 1968/72 F350 300 I-6 w/MX C-O-M and 1973/77 F350 300 I-6 with FMX C-O-M.

Got it all back together and running. No leaks so far.

Anyone got a source for the correct dipstick for the COM transmission?
