Trans cooler/temp question

Over the summer I had my trans rebuilt and installed 6.0 31 row cooler. In the summer when pulling I saw temps about 165 -185 depending on where and how I was driving. This was with pulling a trailer as well. I live in Pa. And the temps are around 35 -55 depending on the day. Lately I have seen my temp get as high as 155 with out pulling anything. I do here a sort of rattling noise around he trans, so I started listening with a stethoscope and found the bypass valve making the noise. I tapped on it and the noise stopped and has not returned. I know this part can become an issue. I have been doing some research an have seen many opinions on replacing vs. deleting it. Tonight I ran up the road about 10 min or do and saw my temp around 105. I felt my cooler liners and none were real hot but the intake line at the cooler was warmer than the return line at the cooler. Is this normal for the return line to be cooler? What should I do as far as the bypass... Replace it or delete it.

Isn't that exactly why there is a cooler on the truck? To make the return line cooler than the feed line?

As for the bypass I would NEVER delete it. If you don't have a bypass and the cooler circuit gets restricted the rear half of the trans doesn't get any lube oil and it will die. If the bypass sticks open your trans runs hot and you have time to fix the problem before the trans is destroyed.

There are three reasons the bypass can open. One, the cooler circuit is restricted and the bypass is doing it's job. Find and fix the restriction and all is well.

Two, a bit of debris has held the ball off the seat allowing it to bypass all the time. Sometimes tapping on it will fix this, sometimes the bypass has to come off (not that hard) to get cleaned.

Third, the spring in the bypass fatigues and allows the bypass to open at a low pressure, effectively bypassing the cooler all the time. You can get a bypass rebuild kit (really easy to do) or replace the entire bypass for not much money.

I know the cooler is for cooling. However I didn't know that the return line would feel so cold. It is a new cooler too. I think I will replace the bypass and make sure I have enough flow coming from the cooler.

If it's warm going into the cooler and cold coming out there is nothing wrong anywhere. These coolers are incredibly efficient in cold weather.

I can second the motion, I recently towed a 10,000 pound trailer and according to my AE, temps never broke 140 degrees.

That make me feel so much better. Thanks guys. I will still replace the bypass valve since it does have 95k on it. I wouldn't want a $50 part ruin my trans.
