Ok so in my 74' I am going to swap in a diesel I know that the weight of the new motor will be too much for the stuck set up and thats fine I was planning on getting a lift for the truck anyways.
So I found these and it sparked an idea and I was hoping some one who knows more about suspension could give me an idea.
Ok so my thought was with this I could run the stock style lift springs I plan on keeping the leaves in front and rear. I was wondering though if it would be possible to add air bags to the front to help compensate for the extra weight or would it be better to getter higher load rate springs?
Thought about it but I want to retain the leaves for some strange reason. More or less this is going to be a mix of a trailer queen and a work truck. Gonna get used but will be babied if you know what I mean.
Running bags with leaf springs would probably have a harsh ride unless there is a lot of weight on it I would think. I would either get some springs that can handle the weight or go with an airbag suspension.
I am going to a 4 link air suspension this spring, all my parts arrived last week, it isn't cheap.
I guess my first question may be a dumb question. The kit we offer for the 74 Fords would imply that you are running a coil front suspension and a radius arm. Did you swap in a leaf spring setup or is there something I'm overlooking.
If you feel that you are going to need extra support for the diesel, air bags will give you a softer ride versus an all leaf suspension. The real draw of air bags is typically the ability to adjust the support you need with varying loads. In your situation though you shouldn't have a need to adjust pressure, so you can get away with a full leaf suspension.
Ok so it is looking more like find some 4" lift springs that can take the weight.
Yes Air Lift I saw the kit yall make for the 74' and is kind of what prompted me to post this becuase I searched for about three hours across various websites and could not find a kit for my truck becuase it came with leafs all the way around.
Ford used several different spring rates for the 2wds, regardless of actual model (150, 250, 350) You might see about the stiffest ones of those and then augment them with air bags.
