gas station problems

Everytime I go to the gas station I always have problems. The pump keeps clicking off like its full, but its not. Its always the same, the guy keeps trying to get it to stay pumping. then he asks is if full, "No its empty", then he tries a a few different ways to get it to pump, maybe he gets lucky and it will start working and sometimes he has to sit there and keep clicking it. Am i the only one this happens too? Is this something with fords? I remmber my Ranger was like that but no where near as bad. Can i do anything about this?

i have that same problem some times... I usually just pull the nozzle out an inch or so and she works fine. I think it is a vapor thing but I dont know. Try that and see if it works. Just pull the nozzle out a little bit (i.e. -> dont push it all the way in) and see if she will pump normally

I tell the gas station guys to try that. IN NJ you can't pump your own gas

I don't think so, Gas prices in NJ are comparable to gas prices in states where you can pump your own gas. I know making it legal to pump your own gas comes up every once and a while, but it gets voted down because they don't want gas station attendents to lose there jobs

That happens with my Bronco too, I just pull the nozzle out a little bit like treehugger stated. That seems to do the trick.

NJBronco138 is right about the gas pumping law. I used to live in NJ and furthermore I used to pump gas! I thought it was stupid too, but laws are laws. (Sometimes they need breakin')

As NJBronco138 said about the law change being voted down, they don't want pumpers to lose their jobs...but more importantly, law makers don't want to pump their own gas!

Anyway, try the nozzle a little further out...mine does the same thing on occation. If it starts acting up I can usually get away with locking it on the slower notch on the handle. It also give me time to clean the windows!!

Oregon has the same law about pumping your own gas. Seems the lawmakers don't think most ordinary people are smart enough to figure out a gas pump. Pulling the nozzle out a little won't work where I live because the vapor recovery nozzles have to be pushed all the way in or they don't work at all.

NJ, do you by chance have a body lift on your Bronco? I believe there are actually two tubes inside the filler neck, an outer and an inner. If I remember right, the outer part is for the vapors to escape. I've heard of people with body lifts, or people who've pulled their tanks out having problems if the two parts of the filler neck aren't lined up right. Or, you could just have some kind of obstruction in the filler neck.

I bet thats it. My bronco isn't lifted but over the summer I had my gas tank and sending unit replaced when it was leaking and the gaige broke the same weekend. What does the vapor line look like? I was under my truck last week end changing the fuel filter and i noticed ther eis a hose that was hanging there not hooked up to anything. It was attached to the frame in front of the gas tank near the rear. It had a plug or soemthing on the end that was attached and the other was jsut hanging there, is that the return line?

What I'm talking about is actually inside the filler neck itself. Kind of a tube in a tube thing. I would guess the hose you are seeing might be the vent hose for the rear axle.

I just had that happen to me yesterday! it didn't really bother me though, so I just pulled the nozzle out around an inch. I still can't believe that it costs a little bit above $50 to fill my tank. LOL all my friends have a little tiny tank that takes $10 to fill up!
