Timing Question on a 400

I got everything running smooth on my engine except for the timing...I have one major problem that I don't know how to work around. There is no pointer on the block to set my timing by...is there a way to do it, without the timing pointer??

Just set it by ear....adjust it to the highest idle speed, then back it down about 1/16" of an inch....take it out for a drive, floor it, if it doesn't ping you're ok...if it does, just keep backing it down 1/16" at a time until there is no more ping.
