Valve stem shenanigans!

Ford F-150 5.0L/302

Block #D80E-8015-E3A
Head # D80E, E6AE

Hey gang. I'm trying to get a fairly aggressive street 302 rebuilt but i've ran across some problems with the valves. The valves I've pulled out are measured at .337" along the stem. the new ones i have are .341(5)" along the stem. the valve heads measure the same across both sets (old and new, I and E)

The new ones WILL NOT go in. not even with a few love taps with a hammer after being lubed up. but the old ones drop out. (tried it on both heads)

My head markings are (not the same lol.) D80E, and E6AE.

WTF is wrong with my heads? everywhere i look, the new valves are supposed to fit, and the old ones don't even exist! help me to figure out what the problem is and if someone else has had the same problem.

Evan

The new valve stems are slightly oversized so that your old valve guides in the heads can be reconditioned instead of having to replaced them (which is relatively expensive) You sure about those block numbers ? That sounds like a 351W block casting. The D9OE 302 block with that casting suffix supposedly has the Hi-po main caps. The heads are definately mismatched, that needs to be corrected as the D8 head has larger chambers than the E6 head

Thanks! we decided we'd drill out the guides, and you know what? the things have been sleeved too small! but, you think i should get another D80E head, or get some GT40's?

If you mean gt40 p heads off and explorer then sure.... As long as you can get a set of headers to work with the backwards spark plugs.... A lot of time truck headers are pretty forgiving.... However stock iron is pretty much all the same to me....

GT40 heads (not the "P" heads) would be a definate improvement.(about 50 hp worth) The D8OE's are good for a couple of purposes, neither of which are automotive related. One has massive amounts of water involved, the other has flat floors and doors.
