so i have a 1964 f100 with no mirros ive heard that i dont need mirrors to drive it legally because of the time period it was grandfatherd in. is this true? or do i have to have 3 mirrors?? thanks in advance
I think you can get away with not having the passenger side mirror. I know that is true of seat belts, but I'm not sure about mirrors. I think you want mirrors anyway. Plus i thought they all came with mirrors.
Why would you not want mirrors? Same for seatbelts? The more safety items you have the safer you'll be. Granted 4000 lbs of steel will do damage to anything that you hit but the idea is to save your life in an accident. Unless you have eyes in the back of your head I suggest putting mirrors on.
All outside mirrors were optional from day one thru 1966 (excepting 1965/66 F100/250 Camper Specials-Western mirrors came as part of the package).
All outside mirrors were installed by the dealers from day one into the 1980's.
1967: L/H outside mirror became standard equipment for the first time, but this is the el cheapo Passenger Car type (some repop sellers call it by the ridiculous name 'Sport' mirror). All other mirrors were optional.
1967/79: The el cheapo mirror was placed inside the cab at final assembly, was not factory installed. Most peeps wanted other mirrors, so...if factory installed, the holes would have to be filled and the door spot painted.
Why someone would want to drive without outside mirrors, I dunno. The traffic is terrible, uncaring peeps weave in/out of lanes without using turn signals, the inside mirror has limited rearward vision.
1953/66 trucks have slots in the doors covered by rubber plugs. Chrome outside mirror w/5" round head repro'd, fit into the door slots. These mirrors offer limited rearward vision, but are better than nothing.
Seat belts were optional thru 1966. New Fed Safety Standard Law for 'light trucks' went into effect beginning of 1967 model run (Septermber 1966).
All F100/350's, Bronco's and Econolines had to have backup lamps, heater/defroster, L/H outside mirror, 4 way emergency flashers, lap seat belts. Shoulder 'straps' were an option 1967/76.
