Significant power loss after driving the truck hard. What could be wrong?

I have a 2008 6.4 F350, bone stock, with 91k miles.

Yesterday I drove the truck about 300 miles and on the way back home I was pushing it pretty hard, going 60-80mph through the mountains. Well I came up on a car in front of me and went to pass... BAM, no power at all, truck slowed to 50 and then 40 mph.

All gauges looked fine, no check engine light. Ironically it was at the dealership yesterday morning for an oil change. They also drained my water separator too.

I stop, shut truck off, and restart. Same problem, no power. With the peddle to the floor, RPMS at 2750, truck at 40mph, and losing speed. I was able to watch the RPMS go up when I punched the go peddle, but the speed did not increase.

I pull off to the side of the road, and check fluids. Everything looks fine. I sit there about 20 minutes, start truck back up. And it's back to normal. WTF.

It did this once before a couple months ago after I drove it hard. Next morning it was fine and has been, until last night.

Any idea what could be wrong?

There should be a code stored. Obviously truck was in limp mode.

I am thinking a sensor for the EGT or engine or oil temp sensor error.

You are going to have to get it read to see what is there.

I took it up to Oreily's auto parts and hooked up their scanner today. It said there was no codes stored ????

That happened to me once. Wrench symbol came on, sat for a minute, started right up. Hasn't happened again.

Ford's IDS is truly the only way to read codes. They have proprietary DTC's that only their several thousand dollar software and OBDII communication cable can read.

O'Riely can only pull generic emissions codes, not ford specific unless they have the proper Ford code reader.

I have a 2009 stock dually diesel 6.4. It lost power past tuesday pulling my 14K 5th wheel while climbing a 6-8% grade. Max was 20 mph. No engine light but turbo guage had very little movement. Taking it to dealer Mon. Have Prem Care warranty so that's some consolation.

If you not had the reflash for the pcm that is probably what they will do. You were in limp mode. P088 code most likely. Ask them for the code so you know.

I have a 2010 king ranch my truck has been doing this for weeks now. I have drove at least 3,000 miles. Has anyone figured the problem out. I use my truck for work I'm getting ready to drive another 2,000 miles. My check engine lite comes and goes.

6.4LPowerloss

Ford has indicated so far code p040d, which is a EGT sensor. Can a bad EGT sensor cause vehicle to lose power or go in a limp mode?

Does computer tell them which EGT sensor is bad? They are also replacing the tube or part that the EGT sensor is plugged into. Not sure what that is called or why they replace that as well???
