Hey everyone. I have a stock 351w in my '95 truck. My problem is my temp gauge never goes past the "N" in normal. When i use the heater the air is warm at best and the temp gauge shows the motor cooling off. I do not have any coolant leaks and the fluid level is correct. I have replaced the thermostat with a 195 deg and this did not fix the problem.
Yes i know i want the motor as cool as possible but even in Texas we need the heater a few days a year.
Go to Harbor Freight and buy a hand held laser temp reader. A good investment for not much cash.
I would then use it to check the temp of the radiator and all the hoses. One thing to check that this tool will not find is if the blend door is actually working.
IMO the gauge behavior and the cool air from the vents is unrelated. The gauge does suck. Most of these trucks I've driven work that way, and mine never goes above "N" except when idling in 100-degree-plus weather (except for this one time, that, well, that's a good story for another time).
Methinks you might have rust gobs in the heater hoses or core. It's equally likely to be a blend door issue, so I would check vacuum to the actuator and that make sure it works properly. Everything else is OK with this motor vehicle?
Disconnect both lines to the heater core and flush it with a garden hose, if you get gunk out you found your problem. If not then remove the heater box cover behind the glove box and look for a foreign object that is blocking the blend door from fully closing.
