I recently bought an 84 f-150. Carbureted 302, factory emission vehicle with all emissions junk removed. When I first for the truck the engine temp got to about 200*f but when I found a leaky radiator I replaced the entire cooling system from soup to nuts. I put in what I thought was a 195* stat and now the engine gets to 180* and I feel as though my heat isn't that great. I did bleed the system but looking for suggestions...why would a 195 stat run at 180* is this normal?
No, it isn't normal for a 195 to run at 180. How did you determine it is at 180? The factory gauges are famous for being inaccurate. If you are basing that on the air temp from the heater that may be caused by a partially clogged heater or the temp door being out of adjustment.
I'm basing the temp off an aftermarket temp gauge. I also used my laser thermometer to check the block temp and upper rad hose both around the same temp. I'll have to check the core and see if it's blocked but I don't think it is.
X2 Shame the small block (sorry Chris) is so difficult to change out the 'stat - especially if they have A/C. I've just gone from playing with that line of engines to the 335 series of 351M/400 and note that the 'stat is dramatically easier to get to on those engines. In fact, it is almost as easy as a Chevy.
