Temp gauge

I have an 89 Ranger 2.9l automatic. My temp gauge doesn't work at all. It stays on "C" all the time. I have a new radiator, thermostat and heater core. I have good heat, but would like to be able to track the engine tempature better. Any ideas what could be wrong? The temp gauge didn't work before I changed radiator, thermostat and heater core either.

Thanks, Mike

did you test the coolant temp sender i replaced one on my 2.3l and it helped with the needle movement. if you find the connector and grond it to the frame or engine it should spike the needle to the max

As mentioned by msully005 you could check your temp sending unit. It's located on the intake manifold close to the front of the engine. It's a brass colored fitting with a single wire clipped to the top of it. They don't cost all that much at the parts store. Let us know what you find.

None of these parts have anything to do with the ability of the guage reading temp. Like already posted by others what's the status on your temp sender?

The temp gauge sending unit has one wire to it, so If you'll ground the temp gauge sending units wire, through about a 10 ohm resistor, the gauge & it's wiring if ok, should read about mid scale, where it would normally indicate, with the engine fully warmed up.

The sending unit for the temp gauge, should read about 75 ohms full cold, to about 10 ohms, with the engine fully warmed up & at normal operating temperature.

Let us know what you find.
