I'm considering a better than stock intercooler upgrade for my 2010 F250 6.4 PSD King Ranch. They range from $1,000.00 to $1,600.00 plus and just wanted to find out if it's money well spent and if there will be a noticable difference over OE.
I would not bother unless you are having an issue with your current one. They will allow a little more airflow but imho not worth it unless your current one has issues.
I'm running the spearco intercooler with the upgraded upper intercooler inlet pipe and flow pro intake inlet pipe, hands down there is an improvement in highway towing or towing the open road. My info is based on running the spartan dpf delete 210 EL tow performance tune. I easily see 200-250 degrees drop in the winter (50 degrees outside) and about 150-175 in the summer (110 degrees outside) EGT's vs the stock intercooler towing above 50 MPH. Now for the down side in city traffic the upgraded spearco intercooler tends to heat soak alot faster in the summer when its over 100 degrees than the stock intercooler and the low speed air flow also affects the other coolers say at less than 35 mph stop and go towing, do to the size and thickness of the spearco intercooler which IMO restricts some airflow. In the summer my coolant temps tend to run a little higher in stop and go traffic than with the stock intercooler. IMO,i think its a worthwhile upgrade if you tow alot outside that i think the only other benefit not towing would be running a larger turbo setup.
You may consider upgrading your passenger side intercooler pipe. The Ford one has a nice crimp in it restricting flow. Do you have any other mods currently?
I have the Banks Intercooler. I also have the River city 3" cold side CAC pipe. EGT's are much lower and no more of that stumble/studder/smoke problem in the rain or high humidity. As you mentioned, they ain't cheap, but well worth it in my opinion (especially if you run high HP tunes).
I've seen the prices all over the board. . . just want to make sure I'm installing the best there is.
For me it would be MBRP and Spartan. They increase +70% over stock. Others have an increase of 30%, since still crimped... Also some grinding of the support is required.
