They will last quite awhile. You can easily rebuild them for around $100. The biggest problem is the bushings used to support the shaft wear over time. These are included in the rebuild kits. You can rebuild one in about an hour.
The only thing that shortens their life is running boost in excess of 30 psi. They really were not designed for that, but will no it with a little tuning.

Yup... 300K+ before mine developed shaft play. Like they say, high boost levels won't help. The late-99+ trucks had problems with surging but it can be fixed with a different wheel or a ported compressor housing. Tunes will be fine for a stock turbo but to my understanding, a slightly larger 1.0AR exhaust housing works really good with tunes. I can't say from experience, though...
