My new (to me - 2009 m/y) V10 with 41K miles has what sounds like a fuel ping when I really get on the accelerator. That's the only time it shows up and as soon as you let off the gas it goes away. Burned through the 1/2 tank or so that was in it when I bought it yesterday and almost as much of another tank that I bought on the way home last night and it's still there. I put 87 octane UL fuel in it when I refueled. Checked the manual and it specifically says both that higher octane fuels and fuel additives are not recommended for this engine.
Really?
Is 87 unleaded what most of you guys are running in your V10? No fuel additive? How about running a cleaner of some sort through the fuel system? Suggestions on what to do to address what sure seems like a fuel ping?
I only use 93 octane and Mike's custom tune with 100% perfection...
not really relevant, but I would suggest going up on grade on the octane you use and see if that helps.
Well, maybe the previous owner had a tune as well. If that's the case, you should have the dealership reflash the computer.
I'd start with cheap options like running a few tanks of quality fuel and injector cleaner. My preferred cleaner is the Chevron Techron. You can get a case of six at Costco for the price of two at the gas station.

Reason: spell check...
When I first bought mine it had the stock tune in it. I pulled my fifth wheel camper up to the lodge and it didn't ping. My point being that even under heavy load pulling threw the mountains it didnt ping. I used 88 octain gas. I agree you mite wanna have a dealer check the tune. Or better yet get a 5 star tuner.
Where did you buy the gas and where do you live? Some 87 octane gas is actually 85 w/ethanol in it to bring it to 87. This product is known as sub-grade gas. In my area it is only marketed by BP.
To answer a couple of questions: I live in TN and bought the gas at an Exxon dealer at an interstate exit kind've out in the boonies on the way home. It was a larger station that appeared to be getting a fair amount of traffic.
Good point about there might be a tune already loaded. Hadn't thought about that before but I could see that being a possibility. I think I'll see if my friendly Ford mechanic acquaintance can flash the memory for me and see if that does anything. A tuner of some description was already in my plans, just have to learn a lot more about them before I jump in the pool.
So what's up with the owners manual specifically saying to NOT use higher octane fuel or any additive? Running some cleaners and a couple of tanks of higher octane fuel was my first thought when I heard the pinging --- I just didn't know if I should after I read the manual.
Running higher octane is a waste of money unless you're running a tune that's set for the octane. Not sure why Ford says "no" to additives, but probably because they don't want to be held liable for all the junk on the market.
I've had multiple dealerships for different OEM's recommend Techron over the years. Running junk gas over time will clog up your system. I've laughed out loud listening to a lady at work complain about having to put $1k into her car's injection system every 3-4 years and not caring it was from the junk gas she uses. So much for saving $0.05 per gallon!
