is there anything wrong with the exhaust, timing, intake or carb? if it ain't broke don't fix it.
x2. Either way, I'd suggest taking at least $200 of that and putting it in savings for when something happens. Ya never know when your gonna run over a box of nails and ruin two of your tires.
if ya got a you pull it around get the door seals out of a newer truck 90 to 96. it takes a little work to get them in put i think they work better than the stockers. i have seen cd radio with speakers for about 80 to 100 bucks around here. also if ya can the speakers out of a newer truck will go in the stock speaker holes in the doors. i used the screws i took out the newer rig and they worked good. so in that you may still have about 600 to 700 to spend on goodies else where.
I didn't want to be the one that said it, but OUCH, 2 hours each way in an old pickup? If you took that money and bought a mid 90's Ford Escort that got 35 MPG, I wonder how long it would take to get that money back in saved gas. Of course, then you'd have two vehicles to worry about.
What about new wheels and tires? If you happen to need tires now, might as well do it while you've got the money. Wheels can also completely change the appearance of the truck. Plus you'd have a little money left over. You never know when a stone will fly through your radiator.
Well, I have made 5-10 in my dentsides for years and 55-60 on my motorcycle in the summer and i am going to finally buy a new or newer truck for cash. I figured my unleaded bill was cancelled out by saving on insurance, plates, taxes, and the depreciationn of a newer vehicle. Our trucks aren't getting any less valuable, only more desireable. Keep the old truck. Mine was nice on the highway, quiet, rode and drove good, cruise was awesome, just good wheels. I like headers on those engines for a highway truck. Mine helped my engine a lot. $200 new. Stereo is good too. I have a older pioneer CD player I would give you for shipping costs that worked good when I pulled it, I baught it new. Wheels and tires would be nice too. The door and window seals probably will make a big difference too. I had a 79 and put some extra insulation on the floor board under the mat and it helped considerably.

3X with Devino...
If highway flying, how about a used rear gear carrier with 2.75 or 3.00 gears? It can save a few bucks and eke out a few more MPGs over the long haul.

Wow, 2 hrs one way?! I agree with fmc400.
I figured the following estimates:
2 hrs at 55mph = 110miles
worst case useage; 12mpg (my truck gets 13/14mpg)
110miles/12mpg=9.16 gallons
$3.29 x 9.16g = $30.13 for a one way ride, or ~$60/day just for gas.
If it were me, i'd upgrade the sound, and sound proofing, weatherstripping, and then carry tons of new spare parts; ign module, cap & rotor, rad hoses, fuel filters, etc. The electric fan is a good decision too, as it is quieter and will free up a few ponies during the long rides. I did that to my truck a couple years ago.
Well I didn't mention it but I stay a couple days away from home while I work...sorry I left that part out...travel 2 hrs one way then work a couple then drive home...so its not SO bad...I just put new wheels and tires on it...warhorse thanks for the cd offer but I don't want to cut into my dash...so I think im going to do the radio wiith adjustable ****...
Cigar u r almost dead on with mileage...108
Hio...will that change the hauling capacity of the truck?
Electric fan...from a tbird or taurus is that right?
