During my truck rebuild, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...the-build.html, I learned that my 351M was already bored .040 over. I'm told that is the max bore for this motor block. The orginal plan had been to convert this 351M into a Built 400. But since the block is really no good to do this, I need to abandon ship on that idea. So I started a poll just to get opinions from my fellow FTE'rs. I really want to stay in the 335 or 385 motor families. One that will have a nice rumble to it and rip up the tires when I want.
What would you do given the choices in the above poll?
A 460 is more common than dirt, so they're cheap. There's an old saying. ..."There's no replacement for displacement." A built 460 will open up lots of horsepower possibilities.
I'd also say go 460. Many aftermarket stroker kits out there and they are not that expensive. Granted you can make some good HP with a 351 or 400 as a stroker also, but not as much as the possibilities for a 460.
You didn't mention anything about cost being an issue. For power the 460 is probably the way to go, but it might also be the most expensive. You have the M-block now. Do you have any parts for it that are worth saving and transferring to a new 400? Intake, headers, pumps, "shinies", etc...

No, not really. It has a Wieland intake that I would probably restore to clean up. The Edlebrock carb I rebuilt about a year ago but the truck never even hit the road, but it would need a serious polishing to restore its finish. Might as well just buy a brand new one and know that it is good.

But aren’t they all terrible anyhow? If I thought I could get 10mpg with it without romping on it, that would be suitable. The ultimate plan would be to back it with a 5-speed, so that would help some.

Hadn’t thought much about it yet, but I would like to think I could do something for around $3.5K - $4K. At this point, the few parts that would be salvageable off the 351M I have are only going to be worth about $300 in new parts, so I am pretty much calling it starting from scratch no matter what. i.e. acquiring a new block and putting all new into it, no matter what motor size goes into it.
I pretty much knew what the answer was before I posted, but just like to get other opinions. So far my thoughts are proving out….
